The Detroit Tigers were able to cage right-hander Michael Lorenzen on a one-year contract. The agreement was first reported by MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand<\/a>. The club has not confirmed the deal. Every team in major league baseball is looking for pitching, and the Tigers are no different. Lorenzen gives them an established presence on their pitching staff. Lorenzen isn’t the only pitcher that the Tigers have signed this winter. They recently retained the services of lefty Matthew Boyd for one year and $10 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lorenzen Contract Details<\/h2>\n

The agreement in which the Tigers were able to cage Lorenzen with is for one year. It is worth $8.5 million, and has $1.5 million in performance incentives built into it. Lorenzen will turn 31-years old in January. He finished the 2022 season with a record of 8\u20136. He also posted a 4.24 ERA in 18 starts for the Los Angeles Angels<\/a>. Lorenzen struck out 85 and walked 44 in 97 2\/3 innings. He made the jump to the Angels rotation after pitching mostly in relief since his rookie season in 2015.<\/p>\n

Lorenzen’s Resume<\/h2>\n

The Tigers finished the 2022 regular season with a record of 66\u201396. That was good enough for fourth place in the AL Central. They finished 26 games behind the division-winning Cleveland Guardians<\/a>. The addition of Michael Lorenzen gives the Tigers a reliable arm, but they still have work to do before Opening Day. On top of that, first baseman Miguel Cabrera is entering the final year of his storied career, so the Tigers will need to start preparing for life after he hangs up his cleats.<\/p>\n

As for Lorenzen, he can help the Tigers now. As a whole, his career has been a small sample size, but the ace-like potential is there. Lorenzen has a career record of 31\u201329, to go along with an ERA of 4.10. He has pitched mostly in relief in his career, which translates into 571 innings pitched. He has appeared in 313 games, and 44 of those games were starts in time split with the Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati Reds.<\/p>\n
