The San Diego Padres<\/a> are fortifying their bullpen with two new accruals from the Miami Marlins<\/a>, All-Star closer Tanner Scott<\/a>, and reliever Bryan Hoeing<\/a>. The trade comes just an hour before the MLB Trade Deadline at 3 PM Pacific.<\/p>\n

The Trades<\/h2>\n

In exchange for the two Marlins relievers, the Padres handed over four of their prospects, three of which come from their top five. That would be pitchers Robby Snelling<\/a> (Padres No. 2 prospect) and Adam Mazur<\/a> (No. 4), as well as infielders Graham Pauley<\/a> (No. 5) and Jay Beshears<\/a> (No. 24). It\u2019s a steep sacrifice but one the Padres seem more than willing to make for Scott alone. In his 44 games this season, Scott has a 1.18 ERA and leads the MLB in lowest average exit velocity. Hoeing’s also no slouch, a 27-year-old right-hander, he has a 2.70 ERA on the season as a middle reliever, sitting well alongside fellow setup men Jeremiah Estrada<\/a> and Adrian Morejon<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Just a few days ago the Padres added RHP Jason Adam<\/a>, 32, from the Tampa Bay Rays<\/a> to their team. In return, the Rays received three prospects including right-hander Dylan Lesko<\/a> (Padres No. 3 prospect, No. 76 overall), outfielder Homer Bush Jr.<\/a> (Padres No. 8), and catcher J.D. Gonzalez<\/a> (Padres No. 12). About the trade Padres general manager A.J. Preller said, “You’re not going to get performers like Jason Adam without giving up good prospects.” Adam himself seemed pretty upbeat about the move to San Diego, “I’m incredibly thankful. Really excited to see what’s in store in San Diego and try to help them win a World Series.”<\/p>\n

What’s Next<\/h2>\n

It\u2019s been a busy week for the Padres following their largely triumphant 7-2 road trip against the Clevland Guardians<\/a>, Washington Nationals<\/a>, and Baltimore Orioles<\/a>. Riding the wave of their success, the Padres are on a mission to secure a wild card spot and a possible bid into the World Series. These new players may just be their ticket inside. This is their second trade involving a pitcher and repairs a glaring issue the team has faced since the start of the season, a series of lackluster closing pitchers. In the past, poor closers have made the difference between what would have been a shut-out game to a near choke. Getting a lefty and All-Star closer like Tanner Scott diversifies the team’s arsenal of pitchers and clears up most of the remaining holes in their roster.<\/p>\n

More starters would have also been a worthwhile investment with Yu Darvish’s<\/a> status remaining uncertain following his addition to the restricted list. However, Joe Musgrove<\/a> should be making an appearance very soon, coming back from elbow inflammation. There’s not much time left before the deadline, but we’ll see if the Padres make any more moves.<\/p>\n
