(Jul. 30) \u2014 The <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2024\/07\/29\/jalen-beeks-rockies-pirates-trade\/\">Colorado Rockies<\/a> lost a 6\u20132 second-inning lead and ultimately fell to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2024\/07\/28\/phillies-trade-for-angels-closer-estevez\/\">Los Angeles Angels<\/a>, 10\u20137, Tuesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Angels starting pitcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cannigr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Griffin Canning<\/a><\/strong>, despite giving up six runs in the first two innings, settled in to retire the last 14 Rockies he faced. Ultimately, he allowed six runs on six hits, walking two and striking out six across six innings.<\/p>\n<p>Rockies starting pitcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/q\/quantca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cal Quantrill<\/a><\/strong> did not survive the fourth, allowing seven runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out four in 3 2\/3 innings. Additionally, he plunked two batters and threw wild pitches in one of his roughest starts of the season. \u201cWe should have won that game,\u201d a visibly disappointed Quantrill said afterwards, \u201cbut I didn\u2019t pitch well enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Rockies \u2013 Angels Game Summary<\/h3>\n<p>The Rockies loaded the bases in the first inning on singles from designated hitter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/blackch02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Charlie Blackmon<\/a><\/strong> and shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tovarez01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ezequiel Tovar<\/a><\/strong> and a walk from third baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcmahry01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ryan McMahon<\/a><\/strong>. Although Angels right fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/adelljo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jo Adell<\/a><\/strong> ran it down, it was deep enough to score Blackmon and advance Tovar to third. Second baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rodgebr02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brendan Rodgers<\/a><\/strong> roped a double to the left-field corner, fair by inches, to bring Tovar home and advance McMahon to third. Strikeouts by first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/toglimi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Toglia<\/a><\/strong> and left fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caveja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jake Cave<\/a><\/strong> sent the game to the bottom of the first with the Rockies leading, 2\u20130.<\/p>\n<p>The Angels tied the game before they even made an out. A <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schanno01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nolan Schanuel<\/a><\/strong> double and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rengilu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luis Rengifo<\/a><\/strong> single, both to right put runners on the corners for left fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wardta01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Taylor Ward<\/a><\/strong>. After a wild pitch advanced Rengifo to second, Ward smashed a single up the middle, scoring both runners and tying the game.<\/p>\n<p>The tie game did not last long, as the Rockies loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the second. Singles by catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diazel01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Elias Diaz<\/a><\/strong> and Blackmon sandwiched a walk from center fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hillisa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sam Hilliard<\/a><\/strong>. Tovar brought in Diaz and advanced Hilliard to third with a sac fly to center. McMahon followed with an opposite-field liner to the seats in the left-field corner, giving the Rockies a 6\u20132 lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know (Canning) likes to start guys soft 0\u20130 with runners in scoring position, so I was looking for something up I could handle and put a good swing on it,\u201d McMahon said of the home run.<\/p>\n<h4>Angels Take Lead<\/h4>\n<p>A two-run double down the right-field line by Angels catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thaisma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matt Thaiss<\/a><\/strong> with runners on the corners in the bottom of the third slashed the Rockies lead to 6\u20134. The Angels took a 7\u20136 lead one inning later on an RBI single from Ward and two-run single from Thaiss. This chased Rockies starter Cal Quantrill from the game after 3 2\/3 innings.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Canning retired 14 straight Rockies after giving up the McMahon dinger. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lambepe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Peter Lambert<\/a><\/strong>, who relieved Quantrill, retired seven of the eight Angels he faced, keeping the score at 7\u20136 going into the top of the seventh.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/q\/quijajo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jose Quijada<\/a><\/strong> relieved Canning in the top of the seventh. He did not protect the lead for long, as a two-out solo homer to left-center tied the game at seven. The tie score also did not last long, with a one-out solo blast close to the same spot by Jo Adell gave the Angels an 8\u20137 lead.<\/p>\n<p>The Angels made it a three-run game in the bottom of the eighth off new pitcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lawreju01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Justin Lawrence<\/a><\/strong>. Rengifo dumped a single to shallow center and stole second. An errant throw to second by Diaz allowed Rengifo to reach third. After Ward fanned and designated hitter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/calhowi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Willie Calhoun<\/a><\/strong> walked, shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/netoza01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Zach Neto<\/a><\/strong> bunted toward the second baseman. Lawrence scooped up the ball and, without breaking stride, saw he had no play at home. He also saw no one covering first, so he sprinted to the bag and tagged Neto with the ball at the last second. The sacrifice bunt scored Rengifo and advanced Calhoun to second. A single to deep right-center by Thaiss \u2014 his fifth RBI of the game \u2014 plated pinch-runner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pillake01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kevin Pillar<\/a><\/strong>. A 1\u20132\u20133 top of the ninth from Angels reliever <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strichu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hunter Strickland<\/a><\/strong> ended the game.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Right for the Rockies<\/h3>\n<h4>Early Offense<\/h4>\n<p>The Rockies scored six runs on six hits, two walks, a double, and a homer in the first two innings.<\/p>\n<h4>Peter Lambert<\/h4>\n<p>Lambert pitched 2 1\/3 innings of scoreless relief, retiring seven of the eight Angels he faced. The lone blemish was a leadoff single by Angels center fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moniami01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mickey Moniak<\/a><\/strong> in the bottom of the fifth. His effort kept the Rockies within a run of tying the game, which they did after he faced his last batter.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Wrong for the Rockies<\/h3>\n<h4>Matt Thaiss<\/h4>\n<p>Taylor Ward went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, but his contribution wasn\u2019t the biggest punch in the Angels\u2019 offense. Instead, it was Matt Thaiss, 3-for-5 with a double, five RBI, and two stolen bases. He was the first position player in Angels history to drive in five runs and steal two bases. Additionally, he was only the second catcher in AL\/NL history to accomplish the feat. The other was Hall of Famer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cochrmi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mickey Cochrane<\/a><\/strong>, who did so for the Detroit Tigers in 1934.<\/p>\n<h4>Offensive Lull after Early Lead<\/h4>\n<p>After the McMahon homer with one out in the top of the second, the Rockies only had one more hitter even reach base. That came on the Tovar homer with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.<\/p>\n<h4>Pitching<\/h4>\n<p>Lambert was the only Rockies pitcher that didn\u2019t surrender any runs. Bird allowed a run on two hits, including the go-ahead solo homer from Adell. Lawrence coughed up two runs in the eighth. Quantrill gave up a season-high seven.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe couldn\u2019t find a rhythm with his pitches,\u201d Rockies manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=blackbu02,blackbu01&amp;search=Bud+Black&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bud Black<\/a><\/strong> said of Quantrill. \u201cHis stuff was good, but he couldn&#8217;t command and couldn&#8217;t locate it \u2014 two walks, two hit-by-pitches.\u201d Black later added, \u201cSurprising and frustrating for Cal, that he couldn&#8217;t get through this when <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2024\/06\/07\/cal-quantrill-great-addition-rockies\/\">he&#8217;s been so good for us all year<\/a>. That was unexpected.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Quijada (1\u20130) snagged the win, with Bird (1\u20132) taking the loss, both in relief. Strickland notched his first save of the season.<\/p>\n<p>The Rockies (38\u201370) and Angels (47\u201360) will play the second game of their three-game set Wednesday night. Rockies left-hander <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/freelky01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kyle Freeland<\/a><\/strong> (2\u20134, 6.23 ERA) will take the hill against Angels right-hander <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/danieda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-07-31_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Davis Daniel<\/a><\/strong> (1\u20132, 5.82 ERA).
