The Texas Rangers<\/a> crossed an item off their Winter to-do list early, as they re-signed general manager Chris Young<\/a><\/strong>. The deal was finalized on Friday prior to their 8:05 pm game against the Seattle Mariners<\/a> at T-Mobile Park. Financial details of the new agreement are unknown but, the extension will cover multiple years. Young will also receive a promotion as part of the new deal. He is now president of baseball operations. His original contract, which was scheduled to expire at the end of October, was for four years.<\/p>\n

Ray Davis’ Statement<\/h4>\n

\u201cChris Young\u2019s impact on the Texas Rangers organization has been immense over the last four years,\u201d Rangers\u2019 managing partner and majority owner Ray Davis said in a statement released. \u201cHis leadership and vision were instrumental in helping bring a World Series championship to Arlington for the first time, and he is passionate about producing a consistent winner on the field year in and year out for our fans.”<\/p>\n

\u201cOur baseball operations group, from scouting and player development to the Major League team, is in great hands with CY at the helm. I look forward to continuing our work together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young Makes History<\/h4>\n

Young became the first former major leaguer to win the World Series as a GM since 2005. Kenny Williams<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0accomplished the feat in 2005 with the Chicago White Sox<\/a>. He was also the first to win a World Series title as both a player and a GM since Johnny Murphy<\/a><\/strong>, who pitched on seven championship teams with the New York Yankees<\/a>. Murphy won the Fall Classic as the general manager with the New York Mets<\/a> in 1969.<\/p>\n

Leading up to Friday, Young’s future with the team was in limbo. There was no contract extension on the table from the Rangers. Many believed that it would eventually happen, but the question of when remained unanswered.<\/p>\n

Welcomed News<\/h4>\n

Young was flying to Japan to scout pitcher R\u014dki Sasaki when the news broke. In a release, he said, \u201cThe Texas Rangers organization holds a very special place for me, and I am excited to continue building on what we\u2019ve started here.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe opportunity to be a part of a World Series championship in my hometown was a tremendous thrill. Our goal is to field a club that can contend for playoff berths. I\u2019m grateful to Ray Davis for the trust he\u2019s placed in me, and I\u2019m confident we\u2019ll be successful on this mission. Our fans deserve nothing less.\u201d<\/p>\n
