He allowed no runs on one hit through seven, walking four and striking out nine. Only one Met even managed to reach second base against Wheeler. \u201cHe was pretty nasty,\u201d Mets manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=mendoca01,mendoca99,mendoz005car&amp;search=Carlos+Mendoza&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carlos Mendoza<\/a><\/strong> told reporters in reference to Wheeler. \u201cWhen you&#8217;re throwing 98 and locating the way he was locating, up at the top of the zone, in and out. Then the sweeper, the split. Unbelievable. He was pretty much unhittable today. And that&#8217;s who he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWheeler was unbelievable,\u201d Phillies manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomsro99.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rob Thomson<\/a><\/strong> added. \u201cWe haven&#8217;t seen that type of velocity out of him and stuff out of him for a while. It&#8217;s as good as it gets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Mets\u2019 eighth-inning rally came off the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2024\/07\/19\/matt-strahm-jeff-hoffman-phillies-middle-relievers-non-closers\/\">Phillies\u2019 All-Star reliever duo<\/a> of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hoffmje02,hoffma003jef&amp;search=Jeff+Hoffman&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jeff Hoffman<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strahma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matt Strahm<\/a><\/strong>, who combined to retire only one of the six batters they faced. They allowed four hits, all singles, and walked one, also allowing two sacrifice flies. \u201cIt was stunning to see Hoffy and Strahmy give it up like that,\u201d Thomson said. \u201cBut that&#8217;s baseball sometimes. They haven&#8217;t done that since we&#8217;ve had them, really.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Mets \u2013 Phillies Game Summary<\/h3>\n<p>The Phillies scored on Mets starter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sengako01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kodai Senga<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s third pitch of the game, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schwaky01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kyle Schwarber<\/a><\/strong> blasting a belt-high fastball 425 feet to the stands in right-center. Senga did not allow any more runs or hits after that, walking one and striking out three in his two innings. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/peterda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">David Peterson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/garrere01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Reed Garrett<\/a><\/strong> followed with five combined scoreless relief innings, allowing one hit and walking three while striking out two.<\/p>\n<p>Wheeler, who had thrown a career postseason-high 111 pitches through seven innings, gave way to Hoffman to start the eighth. A single and a walk put runners on first and second for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vientma01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mark Vientos<\/a><\/strong>, who singled in the game-tying run. On the throw home, Vientos advanced to second, putting runners on second and third with no outs. In came Strahm to face <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brandon Nimmo<\/a><\/strong>, who stroked a go-ahead single to left. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alonspe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pete Alonso<\/a><\/strong>, Thursday night\u2019s hero, made the score 3\u20131 with a sacrifice fly to deep center. Another single, this time to center by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iglesjo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jose Iglesias<\/a><\/strong>, put runners on first and second for pinch-hitter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martijd02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">J.D. Martinez<\/a><\/strong>. In came <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kerkeor01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Orion Kerkering<\/a><\/strong> to stop the bleeding, but a Martinez single to center and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martest01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Starling Marte<\/a><\/strong> sacrifice fly brought both inherited runners home to give the Mets a 5\u20131 lead.<\/p>\n<p>An RBI single by Nimmo in the top of the ninth and RBI pinch-double by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clemeko01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kody Clemens<\/a><\/strong> in the bottom of the ninth completed the scoring.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Right for the Phillies<\/h3>\n<h4>Took Early Lead<\/h4>\n<p>As mentioned before, Schwarber gave the Phillies a lead on Senga\u2019s third pitch of the game.<\/p>\n<h4>Wheeler Was Terrific<\/h4>\n<p>Here\u2019s more about Wheeler and his outing. He induced 30 swings and misses. That is the third-most in the pitch-tracking era (2008 to present). Only <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colege01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gerrit Cole<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/linceti01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tim Lincecum<\/a><\/strong> induced more in a single game. Cole induced 33 in Game Two of the 2019 ALDS, and Lincecum induced 31 in Game One of the 2010 NLDS.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Wrong for the Phillies<\/h3>\n<h4>Runners Left in Scoring Position<\/h4>\n<p>The Phillies left eight men on base. Five were in scoring position. In the third, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/casteni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nick Castellanos<\/a><\/strong> flied to right for the third out with runners on first and second. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marshbr02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brandon Marsh<\/a><\/strong> flied to right to end the fourth with a runner on second. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnetr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trea Turner<\/a><\/strong> popped foul to the first baseman with a runner on second and two outs in the fifth before and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harpebr03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bryce Harper<\/a><\/strong> struck out to end the inning. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bohmal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alec Bohm<\/a><\/strong> grounded into an inning-ending force play with runners on the corners in the eighth, and Schwarber flied to right for the last out of the game with a runner on second.<\/p>\n<h4>The Top of the Eighth<\/h4>\n<p>This does not need any further explanation. That inning was a debacle for the Phillies relief corps.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Right for the Mets<\/h3>\n<h4>Pitching<\/h4>\n<p>Senga, Peterson, Garrett, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/matonph01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Phil Maton<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stanery01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ryne Stanek<\/a><\/strong> combined to limit the dangerous Phillies lineup to two runs on five hits. In the process, they walked five and struck out eight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur whole bullpen, Reed, Stanek, Maton, you know, all those guys, they were doing amazing and gave us a shot,\u201d Nimmo said in the postgame press conference. \u201cWe&#8217;re not even in that position if our bullpen doesn&#8217;t do what they do and keep that at 1-0.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4>Hitting against Phillies Relievers<\/h4>\n<p>During the regular season, Hoffman, Strahm, and Kerkering had a combined WHIP of 0.934. This means the trio combined to allow less than one baserunner per inning. In the eighth inning Saturday, they allowed six.<\/p>\n<h4>When Opportunity Finally Arrived, They Capitalized<\/h4>\n<p>The Mets left seven men on base, but only one was in scoring position. As a team, they hit 4-for-7 with runners in scoring position Saturday.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Wrong for the Mets<\/h3>\n<h4>No Answer for Wheeler<\/h4>\n<p>No need to belabor this point, since we\u2019ve already mentioned that only one Met even reached second base against Wheeler.<\/p>\n<h4>Too Many Pitches in Eighth and Ninth Innings<\/h4>\n<p>Mets relievers have had a heavy workload over the past week. Taking 25 pitches to get through the eighth and 28 pitches to get through the ninth could come back to haunt them in this series.<\/p>\n<h3>Quick Hits<\/h3>\n<p>In the bottom of the third, the left-handed David Peterson snapped a pickoff throw to first, forcing <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnetr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trea Turner<\/a><\/strong> to dive back. Umpire Edwin Moscoso ruled him safe on a very close play. The Mets challenged, but the call stood. Fox commentator <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pierza.01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A.J. Pierzynski<\/a><\/strong> adamantly declared that one angle showed Turner was out. \u2026 Zack Wheeler told Fox\u2019s Tom Verducci after the seventh inning that he did not shake off Realmuto even once.<\/p>\n<p>According to Sarah Langs, the Mets became the eighth team to ever win <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2024\/10\/03\/mets-brewers-nlwc-20241003\/\">back-to-back postseason games<\/a> in which they trailed in the eighth inning or later.<\/p>\n<h3>Quotes<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cOur bullpen (has not received) enough credit over the last few games. We wouldn\u2019t be in that situation if big ol\u2019 Peterson doesn\u2019t come in and do his thing. Unbelievable, he just closed the game in Milwaukee and now he&#8217;s coming in to throw multiple innings for us. Something he&#8217;s never been asked to do. He just comes in and does it perfectly.\u201d <em>\u2014 Mets left fielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nimmobr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brandon Nimmo<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things we&#8217;ve talked about is finishing the game all the way to the ninth inning. The game is never over until the ninth. We&#8217;ve been running with that mentality the past week in Atlanta. Then the last game in Milwaukee we showed that, and it&#8217;s giving us more confidence.\u201d <em>\u2014 Mets third baseman Mark Vientos<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Reed Garrett picked up the win in relief as Jeff Hoffman took the dreaded double-whammy of the blown save-loss. There was no save.<\/p>\n<p>The Mets and Phillies will play Game Two of this best-of-five series Saturday at Citizens Bank Park. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/severlu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Luis Severino<\/a><\/strong> (11\u20137, 3.91 ERA in 2024 regular season) will take the hill for the Mets, facing Phillies left-hander <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sanchcr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2024-10-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cristopher Sanchez<\/a><\/strong> (11\u20139, 3.32 ERA in 2024 regular season).
