Athletics Report: Mason Miller<\/strong> \u201cExcited\u201d for the Group<\/h2>\n

MESA, Ariz. (Feb. 12) \u2014 The Athletics<\/a> (no city name) opened spring training Wednesday at Hohokam Park with pitchers and catchers reporting for the workout. It will be the first time in the history of Major League Baseball that a team competes without a city name, something the Athletics will do while they play in Sacramento, California over the next few seasons. But the players obviously are focused solely on baseball and preparing for the upcoming season in the wide-open AL West. Closer Mason Miller<\/a><\/strong>, a 2024 All-Star, is among the returning faces. He carries high expectations for 2025.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the start of what we hope is something special,\u201d Miller said. The team is looking forward to \u201ckeep building on the work we put in the past couple years. Hasn’t always been pretty, but we\u2019re excited.\u201d<\/p>\n

Old and New Faces<\/h3>\n

Miller said that what teams did last year doesn\u2019t matter, which he called the \u201cawesome part about baseball every year.\u201d He firmly believes every day is another chance to improve. \u201cI\u2019m so excited for the group,\u201d he added. \u201cWe have a lot of guys back from last year, some new guys, too. There\u2019s no reason we can\u2019t continue and build on the success we had\u201d late in 2024.<\/p>\n

Key returnees include Brent Rooker<\/a><\/strong>, JJ Bleday<\/a><\/strong>, Shea Langeliers<\/a><\/strong>, Lawrence Butler<\/a><\/strong>, and JP Sears<\/a><\/strong>. New faces include third baseman Gio Urshela<\/a><\/strong> and pitchers Luis Severino<\/a><\/strong>, Jeffrey Springs<\/a><\/strong>, and Jose Leclerc<\/a><\/strong>. Manager Mark Kotsay<\/a><\/strong> called the trio of new pitchers \u201cthree guys that can have an impact.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back End of the \u2018Pen<\/h4>\n

Kotsay specifically addressed the addition of Leclerc, who pitched the pennant-clinching out for the Texas Rangers<\/a> in the 2023 ALCS<\/a> en route to their first World Series title<\/a>. \u201cWhat he accomplished in the \u201923 run for a World Series Championship was incredible. Last year he didn\u2019t get off to a great start but finished strong. He’s got that experience that we recognized to go alongside Mason. Mason, coming off last season, has solidified his closer role, but to have a veteran who has experience\u201d and \u201caccomplished what he did, you know, that provides some level of comfortability.\u201d<\/p>\n

Miller takes his role as closer seriously, both in what the job entails and the trust it means the team has in him. The Athletics have had several tremendous closers wear the green and gold through the years, such as Huston Street<\/a><\/strong>, Andrew Bailey<\/a><\/strong>, Jason Isringhausen<\/a><\/strong>, Keith Foulke<\/a><\/strong>, and two Hall of Famers, Dennis Eckersley<\/a><\/strong> and Rollie Fingers<\/a><\/strong>. Miller stated that he has a \u201clong way to go\u201d to be mentioned in the same breath as the latter two but continued, \u201cIt\u2019s my honor to get the opportunity to close games. That\u2019s something that nobody should ever really take lightly. It\u2019s the most important three outs in the game. So to know that more times than not, it\u2019s gonna be my number that\u2019s called to go get those three outs is definitely something I wear with honor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Job Continues<\/h3>\n

With the move from Oakland to Sacramento, it would be easy to get distracted given all the changes. Miller, however, said the Athletics did not have much difficulty putting those potential distractions aside. \u201cWe play wherever they tell us to play every year,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery year, you play 80 games on the road no matter where home is.\u201d He went on to state that their job continues, and where they play \u201cdoesn\u2019t really dictate\u201d how they should feel about it. They\u2019re interested to see the new home for themselves in person, yes. But it doesn\u2019t change the ultimate task. \u201cAt the end of the day, our job is to win a game every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The swan song in Oakland during 2024 brought several Athletics legends through the clubhouse and ballpark. Miller mentioned Dave Stewart<\/a><\/strong> and the recently deceased Rickey Henderson<\/a><\/strong> as guys that \u201ccame through all the time.\u201d He said it was \u201creally special to be able to be around guys like that,\u201d even if they aren\u2019t talking about baseball. \u201cJust being in their presence is special. It lets you lean into the history of the franchise and everything that they\u2019ve done.\u201d Miller added, \u201cI don\u2019t know how many other teams and organizations have as many guys come through the clubhouse, even during spring training, so that\u2019s definitely something we take advantage of.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rickey<\/h4>\n

When asked to share his favorite memory of Henderson, Miller chuckled and said, \u201cSpring training here. He\u2019d always come in and spend a week or so with us. Give the guys a good laugh and just be around. You could tell how much he missed it, how much he liked being around, not only for himself, but for us. He was a great resource for so many of our guys. The lasting impact he had \u2014 not only as the person he was but the things he did for this clubhouse \u2014 was awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n

Through all the work, one feeling persists, but the players aren\u2019t the only ones that feel it, according to Miller.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re excited. That\u2019s spring training, and that\u2019s what comes with it. It\u2019s the excitement for you, me, fans \u2014 everybody. Baseball is almost here.\u201d<\/p>\n
