On the day after his 33rd birthday and a week after he was selected for his seventh All-Star appearance, Manny Machado<\/strong><\/a> hit his 2,000th career hit.<\/p>\n

Machado began the 2025 season with the San Diego Padres<\/a> with 1,900 career hits and ended his game with 2001, going 3-for-5 against the Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> on July 7.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s been a whirlwind of a year for the veteran third baseman, Machado, who is playing some of the best baseball of his career right now. Here\u2019s everything that happened for “El Minstro” and more.<\/p>\n

Manny’s 2,000th Hit<\/h4>\n

The road to the Friar captain’s 2,000th career hit was not a straight one. Machado began the game needing two more base hits to get to the elusive number. In his first at-bat he lined to left, bringing him within striking distance of history. Fans only had to wait three more innings to finish the job.<\/p>\n

In classic Manny Machado fashion, his 2,000th hit almost never was. Machado, who’s always had a flair for the dramatic, grounded a ball off the glove of D-backs shortstop Geraldo Perdomo<\/a><\/strong>. By the time Perdomo retrieved the ball, history had already been made. Either way, it was an extremely close play that could have ended very differently.<\/p>\n

The crowd erupted, and Manny was greeted with nearly a minute-long standing ovation. The third baseman removed his helmet and raised it to the sky.<\/p>\n

Of course, the night wouldn’t be complete without a classic Machado homer, and the slugger delivered in the bottom of the eighth. Machado’s 2,001st hit was a moonshot to deep left field.<\/p>\n

Machado is the sixth Padre to reach the 2,000-hit mark and first since Mike Piazza<\/strong><\/a> in 2006. Since reaching 350 homers last season, Machado also joins a list where only he and other players have reached 350 homers and 2,000 hits in their age-32 season or earlier. Among these players are Hall of Fame Legends like Hank Aaron<\/a><\/strong>, Lou Gehrig<\/a>, Ken Griffey Jr.<\/a><\/strong> and Willie Mays<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Of course, the job’s not finished, for Machado anyway. He wants the big 3,000 before his contract ends in 2033. To hit that number, Machado would have to average around 115 hits per season. Since he joined the Padres, he’s averaged 136 hits per season. It would appear that 3,000 may be inevitable.<\/p>\n

What Else Went On That Night?<\/h4>\n

The Padres’ Monday night 6-3 loss to the Diamondbacks came right down to the wire. The Padres left nine men on base that night, continuing their downward-trending offensive power.<\/p>\n

That same day marked legendary pitcher Yu Darvish’s<\/strong><\/a> season debut on the mound after sitting out most of the season with elbow inflammation. Darvish pitched 3 2\/3 innings, allowing two runs, both earned, while walking three, and striking out five.<\/p>\n

The Padres continue their 10-game homestand, finishing out their series against the Dbacks and playing the Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> before heading to the All-Star Break.<\/p>\n
