With Tuesday\u2019s New York Mets<\/a> and Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> game at Citi Field tied at 5-5 in the ninth inning, Brandon Nimmo<\/a> walks it off to help his team take down the Phillies.<\/p>\n

As the bases were loaded, the outfielder hit a single<\/a> to center field to score designated hitter Starling Marte<\/a>. His lone hit of the evening lifted the Mets to a 6-5 triumph over their division rival.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the most talented team I\u2019ve ever played on, so I know exactly what we\u2019re capable of,\u201d Nimmo told SNY<\/a> during a postgame interview. \u201cIt\u2019s just going out there and executing it every night.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He finished the game 1-for-4 with two RBI. New York can potentially sweep the series on Wednesday if they take down the Phillies one more time, but Nimmo said the team needs to prioritize \u201ckeeping it small.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s take it one game at a time,\u201d he added. \u201cWe have another game against a team in front of us. If we can win that game and control what we can control, then we like our chances.\u201d<\/p>\n

Philadelphia (76-56) is five games ahead of the Mets for the first seed in the National League East. But the Mets have slowly begun to creep up on their lead by taking down the Phillies on Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Mets Fifth-Inning Rally Helps Them Take Down Phillies<\/h2>\n

After Sean Manaea<\/a> gave up two runs in the top of the fifth to Bryce Harper<\/a>, Juan Soto<\/a> responded with an RBI single to score the Mets’ first run. Alonso then drove in Francisco Lindor<\/a> by hitting an RBI double to deep left center field.<\/p>\n

Mark Vientos<\/a> scored Marte with an RBI single to right field. Marte, the designated hitter, reached base on a walk from relief pitcher Orion Kerkering.<\/p>\n

Nimmo scored Alonso on a sacrifice fly. From the fifth inning on, the Mets were hitless until the eighth inning, when Lindor hit a single to center field.<\/p>\n

What Went Right for the Mets<\/h2>\n

When the trumpets began to play, that meant Edwin Diaz<\/a> was coming out to replace Helsley. Once he took the mound, the momentum began to swing back in the Mets’ direction. The closer struck out four batters to put the offense in prime position during the ninth inning.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy confidence level is always really good,\u201d Diaz told SNY<\/a> during a postgame interview. \u201cI trust myself. When I\u2019m on the mound, I just think I\u2019m the best right there.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He also offered advice for Helsley, who has been struggling lately to strike out opposing hitters.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been through that,\u201d Diaz said. \u201cMy advice to him is to stay with your head up. We trust him.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What Went Wrong For the Mets<\/h2>\n

New York\u2019s two-run lead turned into a tie ballgame after Edmundo Sosa<\/a> hit a sixth-inning RBI single, and Harrison Bader<\/a> hit an eighth-inning two-run home run.<\/p>\n

Relief pitcher Huascar Brazoban<\/a> gave up three hits and a run to Sosa. Ryan Helsley<\/a>, for whom the Mets traded three prospects on July 30, surrendered the two-run blast to Bader.<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n

The Mets will have the chance to take down the Phillies one more time this week on Wednesday, while Philadelphia will need to capitalize on their momentum if they want to avoid their ninth straight loss at Citi Field. Wednesday’s game is at 7:10 p.m. ET.<\/p>\n
