The New York Mets<\/a> rallied to a five-run comeback to defeat the Chicago Cubs<\/a> 9-7 on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.<\/p>\n Relief pitcher Edwin Diaz<\/a> sealed the Mets’ 81st win of the season by striking out five in two innings.<\/p>\n Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor<\/a> hit a lead-off solo home run during the first that went down as his 29th of the year. Starting pitcher David Peterson<\/a> then allowed Nico Hoerner<\/a> to hit a single before walking Carson Kelly<\/a>.<\/p>\n Both runners were scored by a two RBI double by Carlos Santana<\/a>. Peterson then walked Justin Turner<\/a> and gave up a single to Matt Shaw<\/a>. Hoerner hit an RBI single to score Turner, before Ian Happ<\/a> hit a two RBI double to score Hoerner and Shaw.<\/p>\n Peterson was pulled during the second inning after surrendering five hits, five runs, and two walks.<\/p>\n Pete Crow-Armstrong<\/a> hit a single in the fourth inning before being scored on a throwing error by Jeff McNeil<\/a>. This made the score 6-1 in favor of the Cubs.<\/p>\n Starling Marte<\/a> responded with a single in the fifth before Francisco Alvarez<\/a> hit a force out. Lindor started the Mets’ five-run comeback by scoring Marte on a groundout before Juan Soto<\/a> reached base on a walk. Pete Alonso<\/a> hit an RBI single to score Alvarez. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo<\/a> tied the game at 6-6 with a three-run home run<\/a> that scored Alonso and Soto, which completed their five-run comeback.<\/p>\n McNeil hit a double to right field in the sixth before Lindor hit an RBI single to score him. This gave the Mets their first lead since the top of the first, 7-6.<\/p>\n Hoerner hit a single during the sixth before Seiya Suzuki<\/a> hit an RBI single to score his teammate and tie the game at seven.<\/p>\n Brett Baty<\/a> hit a single in the eighth before being replaced by pinch-hitter Luisangel Acuna<\/a>. Alvarez then hit a two-run home run to score Acuna and give the Mets a 9-7 lead.<\/p>\n Diaz, the relief pitcher, came in during the eighth and recorded three consecutive outs. He then recorded three more strikeouts during the ninth inning.<\/p>\n The Mets’ lineup ended the ballgame with 11 hits and nine RBI. Lindor ended with three RBI, Nimmo had three, Alvarez had two, and Alonso had one.<\/p>\n Peterson, the starting pitcher, gave up five runs across the first two innings. Huascar Brazoban<\/a> and Gregory Soto<\/a> each gave up a run.<\/p>\n The Mets can claim the series if they defeat the Cubs on Tuesday or Wednesday. Tuesday\u2019s game is at 8:05 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.
