The New York Mets<\/a> lose to the Chicago Cubs<\/a> 10-3 on Wednesday at Wrigley Field on the heels of pitcher Jonah Tong<\/a> surrendering five runs and seven hits in two innings.<\/p>\n The rookie ended his third loss of the season with a strikeout and a 7.71 ERA.<\/p>\n \u201cThe approach doesn\u2019t change on that end,\u201d Tong told SNY<\/a> during a postgame interview when asked about the Cubs’ aggressive hitting approach. \u201cJust gotta do a better job of limiting damage.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Matt Shaw<\/a> hit a single during the third inning before Tong walked Michael Busch<\/a>. Nico Hoerner<\/a> then hit a single. Ian Happ<\/a> hit a two-RBI double to score Shaw and Busch. Moises Ballesteros<\/a> hit an RBI single to bring Hoerner home. Seiya Suzuki<\/a> then hit an RBI double to score Happ. Pete Crow-Armstrong<\/a> then scored Ballesteros with a sacrifice fly to give the Cubs a five-run advantage over the Mets.<\/p>\n Shaw then hit a solo home run during the fourth to make it a 6-0 ballgame in his team\u2019s favor. This played a factor in the Mets losing to the Cubs.<\/p>\n Mark Vientos<\/a> hit a single during the fifth, before catcher Francisco Alvarez<\/a> scored the Mets’ only run of the game on a two-run home run. Ballesteros was then walked before scoring on a fielding error by Vientos. Crow-Armstrong reached base on that play due to the error. He would then make it home on a wild pitch.<\/p>\n Shaw hit a single during the sixth inning, before Busch hit a two-run home run to make the score 10-2.<\/p>\n Juan Soto<\/a> hit a solo home run during the eighth inning, but that wasn\u2019t enough to help the Mets overcome the Cubs\u2019 seven-run lead.<\/p>\n Alvarez hit his 11th home run of the year, and Soto smashed his 43rd of the season. Both players combined for three RBI and were the Mets’ lone source of production on offense.<\/p>\n The Mets’ pitching staff gave up 12 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) to the Cubs. Richard Lovelady<\/a> gave up two runs, Clay Holmes<\/a> surrendered one, and Sean Manaea<\/a> surrendered two.<\/p>\n Holmes and Manaea voluntarily pitched, according to manager Carlos Mendoza<\/a>.<\/p>\n “We\u2019ll piece it together,\u201d Mendoza told SNY<\/a> during a postgame interview when asked if he\u2019s concerned about not having enough pitchers. \u201cWe\u2019ll continue to find ways to get 27 outs and get the wins that we need here.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The Mets\u2019 manager also refused to blame Tong for the rough start.<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s part of it,\u201d Mendoza said.<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s hard to put it on them or blame them. This is where we are, and we\u2019ll continue to go through it and teach those guys.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n The lineup ended the game with four hits. Francisco Lindor<\/a> and Pete Alonso<\/a> ended the seven-run loss to the Cubs without a hit.<\/p>\n The final game of the series is on Thursday at 7:40 p.m. Eastern. SNY will broadcast the last showdown of the regular season between the Mets and Cubs.
