On Monday afternoon, New York Mets<\/a> President of Baseball Operations David Stearns claimed manager Carlos Mendoza<\/strong><\/a> will remain with the club\u00a0despite missing the playoffs for the first time since 2023.<\/p>\n

His remarks came after the Mets started the season with the best record in baseball at 41\u201323, only to end the year 83\u201379. The Mets missed out on the last National League Wild Card spot by a game. They lost their final game of the season to the Miami Marlins<\/a> 4\u20130, leading to the Cincinnati Reds<\/a> claiming the last spot.<\/p>\n

Mendoza Will Remain with Mets<\/h4>\n

SNY reporter Andy Martino<\/a> wrote on Sunday that the Mets have no intention of moving on from Mendoza despite missing the playoffs. Stearns spoke to reporters at Citi Field on Monday to discuss his plans for the team moving forward. He noted that he was disappointed since the team didn\u2019t perform as well as expected. The general manager was then asked if Mendoza will remain with the Mets or not.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still think he\u2019s a very good manager and I think he\u2019s going to demonstrate that,\u201d Stearns said<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re going to go through an evaluation of our entire coaching staff over the course of the next few days.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mendoza Struggled With Managing Bullpen<\/h4>\n

Even though Mendoza will remain with the Mets, he struggled to lead their bullpen on multiple occasions. For example, on Sunday, nine pitchers made anppearances against the Marlins. Sean Manaea<\/strong><\/a> was the starter, but lasted an inning and a half. Edwin Diaz<\/strong><\/a> tossed two innings, but ultimately the bullpen surrendered nine hits and four runs to the Marlins.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need more innings out of our starting staff, there\u2019s no question about that,\u201d Stearns added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, Mendoza used four pitchers in Saturday\u2019s game against the Marlins. Clay Holmes<\/strong><\/a> pitched six innings and gave up the game’s only hit, meaning he has been inconsistent at managing the bullpen.<\/p>\n

Some believe Mendoza lacks leadership, but Stearns doesn’t see it that way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think we have leaders in our clubhouse,\u201d he continued. \u201cI think we had leadership in our clubhouse. I do not think that was a problem.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h4>\n

With Mendoza remaining with the Mets, Stearns has a handful of decisions to make in the offseason. They include whether Pete Alonso<\/strong><\/a>, Diaz, Ryne Stanek<\/strong><\/a>, Tyler Rogers<\/strong><\/a>, and Cedric Mullins<\/strong><\/a> will stay on the roster or take their talents elsewhere.<\/p>\n

Stearns plans to remain optimistic when it comes to the Mets \u201cposition player grouping.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI take ownership of this roster,\u201d Stearns concluded. \u201cI\u2019ve been here for two years, that\u2019s plenty of time to shape a roster.\u201d<\/p>\n
