Two batters later, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/volpean01.shtml\">Anthony Volpe<\/a> singled into right field, scoring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stantmi03.shtml\">Giancarlo Stanton<\/a> and giving the Yankees a 2-0 lead. Then, with the bases loaded, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wellsau01.shtml\">Austin Wells<\/a> lined a sharp ground ball to Red Sox first baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lowena01.shtml\">Nathaniel Lowe<\/a>, who couldn\u2019t handle it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chishja01.shtml\">Jazz Chisholm Jr.<\/a> and Rosario both scored, putting the Yankees in front 4-0.<\/p>\n<h3>Schlittler Caps Off Scoreless Outing<\/h3>\n<p>Staring down pitch number 107, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schlica01.shtml\">Cam Schlittler<\/a> got <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\">Trevor Story<\/a> to ground out on a 98 MPH sinker. This ended the top of the eighth inning, as well as Schlittler\u2019s night. Across eight scoreless innings, Schlitter recorded 12 strikeouts, becoming the first rookie to strike out 10 or more batters in a postseason game since 1997. His 12 punchouts were also the fourth most by a rookie in a postseason game.<\/p>\n<h3>Bednar Shuts the Door<\/h3>\n<p>For the second straight night, Yankee reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bednada01.shtml\">David Bednar<\/a> took care of business in the ninth inning. Despite starting in a do-or-die Game Three, Schlittler had a performance for the ages. In his first career postseason start, Schlittler became the first postseason pitcher to throw eight or more scoreless innings and record 12 or more strikeouts with no walks.<\/p>\n<h3>What Went Wrong for the Yankees<\/h3>\n<p>The Yankees didn&#8217;t score in eight of nine innings tonight, doing all their damage in the fourth inning. There were plenty of opportunities for them to pad their lead, but none came to fruition.<\/p>\n<h3>Manager Reactions<\/h3>\n<p>After battling back from a 1-0 series deficit, Yankee manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/booneaa01.shtml\">Aaron Boone<\/a> expressed the utmost confidence in his group. \u201cI knew we wouldn\u2019t flinch after game one,\u201d said Boone. \u201cThe guys came out\u2026and it\u2019s a lot of fun to win this game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With Cam Schlittler dominating, Red Sox manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/coraal01.shtml\">Alex Cora<\/a> acknowledged that Boston had no other choice but to be flawless Thursday night. \u201cWe needed to be perfect tonight, because he was perfect,\u201d said Cora.<\/p>\n<h3>Next Matchup<\/h3>\n<p>The Yankees will have Friday off before heading north on Saturday to face off against the <a href=\"http:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/bluejays\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:08 P.M. as both sides will look to take a 1-0 advantage in the ALDS.
