Will Sammon<\/a> of The Athletic<\/em> reported Thursday that New York Mets<\/a> reliever Reed Garrett<\/strong><\/a> underwent Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. He is expected to miss the entire 2026 season.<\/p>\n

Garrett had two stints on the injured list this year to deal with his right elbow. He missed two weeks in late August and early September to deal with inflammation, but was put on the IL less than two weeks later because of a sprain. He was out the rest of the season, and now will be out until 2027.<\/p>\n

Pitching Collapse<\/h4>\n

Garrett’s season is perfectly emblematic of how the Mets’ pitching season went. Through the end of May the Mets had one of the premier staffs in the game, and Garrett was part of that. He’d given up only two earned runs in 24 2\/3 innings. It seemed like he’d be a key setup man in front of closer Edwin Diaz<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

But from June through the end of the season, Garrett and the rest of the Mets pitching staff struggled mightily. Garrett had a 6.67 ERA starting in June, tenth-worst among relievers with at least 20 innings, per Fangraphs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Mets President of Baseball Operations David Stearns tried to fortify the bullpen at the trade deadline, but the acquisitions didn’t help. Ryan Helsley<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and Gregory Soto<\/strong><\/a> both struggled as the Mets collapsed.<\/p>\n

By the end of the season, Diaz, Tyler Rogers<\/strong><\/a> and Brooks Raley<\/strong><\/a> were the only relievers manager Carlos Mendoza<\/strong><\/a> could consistently rely on. Add on a starting rotation that could barely get through five innings each night, the Mets never had enough pitching to adequately get through each game.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the Mets finished at 83\u201379 and on the outside of the playoff picture.<\/p>\n

Upcoming Offseason<\/h4>\n

Garrett undergoing Tommy John surgery means the Mets are losing another key reliever from the 2025 roster. Helsley, Rogers, Soto and Ryne Stanek<\/strong><\/a> are all free agents. Raley has a club option, so he could be on the market. Diaz can opt out of his deal, but said to reporters after the season-ending loss to the Miami Marlins<\/a> that he’d like to return to the Mets if he did.<\/p>\n

“I love this organization,” Diaz said<\/a>. “They’ve treated me really, really good.”<\/p>\n

In parts of three seasons with the Mets, Garrett has a 4.10 ERA in 129 2\/3 innings. He’s under contract through 2029.<\/p>\n
