Alex Bregman<\/a> has decided to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox<\/a>, as first reported by the New York Post<\/a><\/em>. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million contract last offseason with the Red Sox.<\/p>\n

Bregman\u2019s 2025<\/h3>\n

The former Houston Astros<\/a> standout had a .938 OPS on the year through May 23, before a quad injury sidelined him for over a month. Bregman still made the All-Star team this year, one of three Red Sox players to do so.<\/p>\n

Bregman eventually got worse every month since coming back from his injury on July 11. His month of September was particularly bad, posting a .640 OPS while hitting only two home runs with a .216 batting average.<\/p>\n

Free Agent Market<\/h3>\n

Bregman is set to be one of several players to get major contracts for their services. The biggest guns in this arms race include Kyle Tucker<\/a>, Bo Bichette<\/a>, Kyle Schwarber<\/a> and Pete Alonso<\/a>. As far as third basemen go, Bregman is in a two-man heat with Eugenio Suarez<\/a> for the best third baseman on the available market.<\/p>\n

Bregman proved, at least in the first half of the season, that he still has gas in the tank.<\/p>\n

How this Affects the Red Sox<\/h3>\n

The Red Sox felt so confident in Bregman that they traded away Rafael Devers<\/a>. Devers was a former star player and seemingly someone who would stay with the Red Sox for the rest of his career. Bregman not only could rake at the plate, but always had the glove for third base, something Devers lacked.<\/p>\n

Bregman\u2019s leadership on the team hasn\u2019t gone unnoticed either. Even Craig Breslow<\/a> knows how important Bregman has been.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery conversation we’ve had I think I’ve learned something about how his impact and influence have rubbed off on his teammates,\u201d Breslow told ESPN.<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n

Despite Bregman\u2019s opt out, Red Sox fans should have faith in Breslow to be able to bring him back. After all, he did it once, he can do it again. Plus, the Red Sox aren\u2019t some middle-of-the-pack team like last year. They have a squad that competes for AL East titles and maybe some World Series.<\/p>\n

Not only that, Breslow has a track record for making moves to improve the Red Sox. The Bregman signing, the Aroldis Chapman<\/a> signing, the Garrett Crochet<\/a> trade, and the Carlos Narvaez<\/a> trade are a few examoles. At the very least, Red Sox fans should trust Breslow, even for the simple fact that he\u2019s not Chaim Bloom.<\/p>\n
