The New York Mets<\/a> have acquired right-handed reliever Joey Gerber<\/strong><\/a> from the Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>. The Rays received a cash consideration in return. Anthony DiComo of MLB.com<\/a> broke the news on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Mets Acquire Gerber<\/h4>\n

The Mets made the move to acquire Gerber after he played two seasons in the majors. The 28-year-old’s career began with the Seattle Mariners<\/a> in 2024. He had a 1\u20131 record with a 4.02 ERA. Gerber put up six strikeouts in 15 2\/3 innings, but gave up 13 hits, eight runs and five walks. The Mariners missed the playoffs that year, going 85\u201377.<\/p>\n

He played for the Rays this season, appearing in two games. Gerber had four strikeouts with a 2.08 ERA. However, the right-hander allowed three hits including a home run. The Rays missed the playoffs this year, going 77\u201385. However, Gerber\u2019s performance was good enough to convince the Mets to trade for him with the offseason underway.<\/p>\n

A Much Different Bullpen<\/h4>\n

Gerber is headed to Queens as a member of the Mets bullpen. They had Nolan McLean<\/strong><\/a>, David Peterson<\/strong><\/a>, Ryan Helsley<\/strong><\/a>, Tyler Rogers<\/strong><\/a>, Gregory Soto<\/strong><\/a>, Jonah Tong<\/strong><\/a> and Brandon Sproat<\/strong><\/a> at their disposal last season. Reliever Edwin Diaz<\/strong><\/a> opted out of his contract on Monday after the Mets ended the season one game shy of making the playoffs. Helsley, Soto, Rogers and Ryne Stanek<\/strong><\/a> have also opted for free agency.<\/p>\n

Frankie Montas<\/strong><\/a> exercised his $17 million player option for 2026. He will likely miss next season due to elbow injury. The team also picked up Brooks Raley<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s $4.75 million club option for next year. The Mets declined to pick up Drew Smith<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s $2 million player option. The Mets will likely try to re-sign Diaz to a long-term extension.<\/p>\n

As it stands, the Mets’ current relief options include Huascar Brazoban<\/strong><\/a>, Jonathan Pintaro <\/a><\/strong>and Dylan Ross<\/strong><\/a>. Reed Garrett<\/strong><\/a> will miss the entire season due to UCL reconstruction surgery. Adding Gerber to the mix can revive their bullpen.<\/p>\n
