Of surprise to few, if anyone, the Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) announced Kurtz as the unanimous 2025 winner. He is the second player from the Athletics to win the award unanimously, joining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcgwima01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mark McGwire<\/a> (1987). This comes days after Kurtz <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2025\/11\/07\/nick-kurtz-athletics-silver-slugger\/\">became the only rookie to be among the 2025 Silver Slugger Award winners<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kurtz is the ninth Rookie of the Year in Athletics franchise history. This is second in the American League to the 10 from the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/yankees\/\">New York Yankees<\/a>. Additionally, Kurtz is the eighth AL first baseman to win the award. The others are McGwire, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dropowa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Walt Dropo<\/a> (1950), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chambch01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chris Chambliss<\/a> (1971), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hargrmi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mike Hargrove<\/a> (1974), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=murraed02,murray005edd&amp;search=Eddie+Murray&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Eddie Murray<\/a> (1977), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alvin Davis<\/a> (1984), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/abreujo02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jose Abreu<\/a> (2014).<\/p>\n<h3>The 2025 Season of Nick Kurtz<\/h3>\n<p>Kurtz slashed .290\/.383\/.619 (122-for-420) across 117 games in 2025. He had 26 doubles, two triples, 36 homers, and 86 RBI. Notably, he had a 1.002 OPS \u2014 one of three hitters in the majors with at least 400 plate appearances to break the 1.000 OPS barrier. The others are familiar even to non-baseball fans: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Aaron Judge<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ohtansh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shohei Ohtani<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The capstone of Kurtz\u2019s season came July 25 in Houston. That night, <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2025\/07\/25\/20250725-nick-kurtz-four-homers-athletics-astros\/\">Kurtz went 6-for-6<\/a> with four homers and a double. Additionally, he had 19 total bases, eight RBI, and a record-tying six runs scored. His 19 total bases tied the single-game record set by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greensh01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Shawn Green<\/a> in 2002. In addition to being the first rookie to score six times in a game, Kurtz was the first Athletics player and first rookie to have a four-homer game. Since no one has ever hit five in a game, Kurtz tied that record as well.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/streamable.com\/mlbfilmroom\/00u7cbvzliHpM8X2R356\/the-nick-kurtz-game?partnerId=web_my-reels_video-share\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>Kurtz, Wilson Finish 1-2<\/h3>\n<p>His teammate, shortstop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=wilsoja05,wilson016jac,wilsoja04&amp;search=Jacob+Wilson&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2025-11-10_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jacob Wilson<\/a>, finished second in the voting. This marked the fifth time in the AL that teammates were the winner and runner-up. It has happened far more recently in the NL, where it has occurred four times. It split into two awards, one for the NL and one for the AL, in 1949. Two BBWAA members from each American League city submitted ballots prior to postseason play. For the first time ever, they submitted five names. From 1980 to 2024, they submitted three.
