The New York Mets<\/a> gave out deals to five players, so they can avoid arbitration before Thursday evening’s deadline. The club reached an agreement with pitchers David Peterson<\/a><\/strong>, Tylor Megill<\/strong><\/a>, Reed Garrett<\/strong><\/a> and Huascar Brazoban<\/strong><\/a>. The Mets also gave a new deal to Francisco Alvarez<\/strong><\/a>, avoiding arbitration with the 24-year-old catcher. Additionally, they have yet to issue a new contract to Luis Torrens<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

Four Pitchers Avoid Arbitration<\/h4>\n

The arbitration figure deadline is used for teams and eligible players to exchange salary figure proposals if a deal has not yet been reached. In the Mets’ case, they will avoid arbitration with five of their players, four of whom are pitchers.<\/p>\n

They started by agreeing to terms on a $2.5 million contract with Megill. The 30-year-old righty has spent the first five seasons of his major league career with the Mets. Last year, he finished with a record of 5\u20135 and a 3.95 ERA in 14 starts, in which he recorded 89 strikeouts. But Megill missed the remainder of the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in September. There is a high probability that he will miss the entire season.<\/p>\n

The Mets then agreed to a $1.3 million deal with Garrett. The 33-year-old righty came to Queens in 2023 from the Baltimore Orioles<\/a>. Last season, he went 3\u20136 in eight starts with a 3.90 ERA. In 55 innings, he struck out 64 batters, but also underwent Tommy John surgery in October. There is an increasingly high probability that he will miss this season, like his teammate Megill.<\/p>\n

The Mets later reached an $8.1 million deal with Peterson, who made his first All-Star appearance this season. The 30-year-old lefty spent his last five seasons with the club as a starter. Last season, he went 9\u20136 in 30 starts with a 4.22 ERA. In 168 innings, he recorded 150 strikeouts as the longest-tenured player on the roster. There has been some speculation that the Mets might trade Peterson this offseason for a higher-caliber starting pitcher.<\/p>\n

Pitching Depth<\/h4>\n

The Mets also reached a $1.05 million contract with Brazoban, who is entering his second full season in Queens. The 36-year-old righty went 5\u20132 in 52 games with a 3.57 ERA. In 63 innings, he had 57 strikeouts and 27 walks.<\/p>\n

Alvarez Avoids ArbitratioAfter playing the first four seasons in the Big Apple, Alvarez and the Mets reached an agreement on a $2.4 million contract. Last season, he recorded 11 home runs, 32 RBI, 12 doubles and 63 hits on a .256 batting average. In four seasons, he hit 48 home runs, 143 RBI and 39 doubles.<\/p>\n

Torrens, who is also a catcher, has yet to receive a deal from the team. The 29-year-old righty became a Met in 2024. In 92 games, he recorded 59 hits, 29 RBI, five home runs and 14 doubles. If the Mets decide not to reach a new deal with Torrens, there are other catching options, including prospect Drew Romo<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
