The Boston Red Sox<\/a> offseason moves article published on Tuesday has already aged poorly. Former Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> pitcher Ranger Suarez<\/strong><\/a> has agreed to terms on a five-year $130 million contract on Wednesday to head to the Red Sox. The one-time All-Star posted a 3.20 ERA in 157 1\/3 innings last season. News of this development was first reported by Bob Nightengale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Phillies Tenure<\/h4>\n

Suarez was signed for a mere $25,000 coming out of Venezuela as a 16-year-old. It would take him six years to make his major league debut, doing so in 2018 with the Phillies. He managed five innings while allowing four earned runs against the Cincinnati Reds<\/a> on July 26 of that year.<\/p>\n

Suarez spent much of his time in the bullpen up until 2021. Then-manager Joe Girardi<\/strong><\/a> experimented with him as a starter. Considering he\u2019s now been a starter for the last four seasons it\u2019s been a fairly decent move.<\/p>\n

Suarez made the All-Star team in 2024, whilst being considered one of the biggest snubs of the 2025 All-Star game this past season. He put up career-best marks in walks per nine innings and strikeout to walk ratio, tossing a career-high in innings pitched.<\/p>\n

Suarez also ranks in the 98th percentile in hard-hit percentage, 95th in average exit below, and 90th in pitching run value for the 2025 season. This is according to Baseball Savant<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Overall, Suarez boasts a 3.38 ERA in 762 innings when appearing as a starter. Suarez ended up declining his $22.025 million qualifying offer from the Phillies this offseason to test free agency.<\/p>\n

What This Means for the Red Sox<\/h4>\n

The Red Sox now have another legitimate starter to pair with Garrett Crochet<\/strong><\/a>. Better yet, it makes the Sonny Gray<\/strong><\/a> and Johan Oviedo<\/strong><\/a> trades a lot more bearable. Best of all, the Red Sox can no longer say they haven\u2019t signed a major league free agent this offseason. They did it with a bang as well.<\/p>\n
