All talented players in their own right, but President of Baseball Operations David Stearns was in search of a superstar. And he acquired one that he is already quite familiar with from his time as a member of the Brewers organization.

“Acquiring Freddy adds another established starter to help lead our rotation,” Stearns said in a statement after the team announced the trade. “Throughout the offseason, we sought to complement our rotation with another front-end pitcher and were thrilled we were able to bring Freddy to the Mets.”

Freddy Peralta is coming off a nice season, going 17–6 in 33 starts with 204 strikeouts. In 176 ½ innings, he posted a career-best 2.70 ERA. Those numbers were good enough to earn him his second All-Star appearance, as the Brewers reached the NLCS for the first time since 2018.

Peralta’s first All-Star appearance came during an impressive 2021 campaign, in which he went 10–5 in 27 starts with 195 strikeouts. The 29-year-old righty ends his Brewers tenure, that spanned across eight seasons, with a record of 70–42 in 162 starts with 1,153 strikeouts.

Mets Receive Myers

Freddy Peralta won’t be heading to Citi Field alone, as Myers will join him as the Mets’ latest acquisition. In 138 innings, he had a 3.00 ERA.

This season, Myers took a step back in production, going 1–2 in 22 appearances with 38 strikeouts. He will join the Mets bullpen next to Williams, Weaver, A.J. Additionally, Myers has five years of team control remaining and should serve in a prominent relief role.

“Over the past two seasons, Tobias has become an extremely valuable Major League pitcher,” Stearns added. “His ability to pitch out of both the rotation and bullpen allows him to help our team in multiple ways. His addition adds another quality, young, major league arm to our organization.”

Brewers Get Two Top Five Prospects

Even though their rotation will be missing its superstar, the Brewers can look to the future. Williams, the Mets’ No. 3-ranked prospect on MLB.com, brings a combination of versatility and talent to the roster. Within four minor league seasons, he recorded 269 hits, 117 RBI, 31 home runs and 206 stolen bases. The 22-year-old can play three positions, ranging from shortstop to centerfield.

The same goes for his teammate, Sproat, the Mets’ fifth-ranked prospect on MLB.com. The 25-year-old righty made his major league debut this past season, going 0–2 in four starts. Despite the forgetful first impression, in two minor league seasons, he went 15-10 in 48 starts with 244 strikeouts. Even though the Mets got their superstar, the Brewers have a bright future ahead of them if both players develop at the rate they’ve been at.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Freddy Peralta is coming to Queens.
