Boston Red Sox<\/a> standout outfielder Roman Anthony<\/strong><\/a>, pending a physical, will be added to Team USA for the World Baseball Classic. He will be the injury replacement for Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> outfielder Corbin Carroll<\/strong><\/a>. He will be out for three months due to surgery to repair a broken bone in his right hand. Manager Mark DeRosa<\/strong><\/a> and general manager Michael Hill selected Anthony\u00a0 among a field of players that included outfielders Steven Kwan<\/a>,<\/strong> Riley Greene<\/strong><\/a> and Wyatt Langford<\/strong><\/a>. This was wasfirst confirmed by Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.<\/a><\/p>\n

Star in the Making?<\/h4>\n

Anthony, the No. 2 prospect in baseball entering last season, came in with a ton of hype. For the most part he delivered, batting leadoff for a Red Sox team that was surging after trading away Rafael Devers<\/strong><\/a>. Unfortunately, he would suffer an oblique strain on September 3 and miss the rest of the season. He was the catalyst, as the Red Sox\u2019 lineup struggled without their table setter. The Red Sox runs per game average went down to 4.28 per game after Anthony’s injury from the 4.94 runs they averaged from his debut to September 3. The lack of offense especially showed heavily in the Red Sox AL Wild Card loss to the New York Yankees<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Other Red Sox in the WBC<\/h4>\n

Anthony, pending a successful physical, will become the 15th player on the Boston Red Sox to be competing in the World Baseball Classic. He will be joining reliever Garrett Whitlock<\/strong><\/a> on Team USA. Other notable Red Sox participating include Ceddanne Rafaela<\/strong><\/a>, Willson Contreras<\/strong><\/a>, Wilyer Abreu<\/strong><\/a>, Ranger Suarez<\/strong><\/a> and Jarren Duran<\/strong><\/a>. The Red Sox are now even with the Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> for third most participants in the World Baseball Classic. Only the Seattle Mariners<\/a> and the New York Mets<\/a> have more participants, with 16 and 17 participants respectively.<\/p>\n
