The Baltimore Orioles<\/a> opened up spring training with a 2\u20130 win against the New York Yankees<\/a>. Both teams remained in stalemate until the bottom of the sixth when first baseman Pete Alonso<\/strong><\/a> mashed a home run out of Ed Smith Stadium and into the parking lot behind left field. The Orioles pitching remained strong throughout with 13 strikeouts through the first eight innings.<\/p>\n The game started with a plethora of zeroes on the board. Orioles ace Trevor Rogers<\/strong><\/a> started the game for the Orioles, giving them two innings and striking out the side in the second. The Orioles\u2019 bullpen followed up Rogers’s strong start with eight scoreless innings. The Yankees only mustered two hits all game off of Orioles pitching. 2025 Orioles Minor League Pitcher of the Year Trey Gibson<\/strong><\/a> posted three scoreless innings in to end the game, striking out three and earning the save.<\/p>\n Offensively, the Orioles produced across the board. The team totaled eight hits from six different hitters, including two from Tyler O’Neill<\/strong><\/a>. Pete Alonso plated the only two runs of the game with his mammoth home run in the sixth inning. New addition Sam Huff<\/strong><\/a> also added two doubles after coming in to catch for Samuel Basallo<\/strong><\/a> in the sixth inning.<\/p>\n The Orioles pitching staff combined for 13 total strikeouts from six total pitchers in their spring opener against the Yankees with only Rico Garcia<\/strong><\/a> not notching a strikeout. Grant Wolfram<\/a><\/strong> was especially dominant striking out the side in the fifth on only 13 pitches and 11 strikes. Trey Gibson as well was dominant as he tries to fight for a spot on the Opening Day roster. Gibson finished the last three innings of the game allowing two hits and striking out three in his spring training debut.<\/p>\n The Orioles gave Pete Alonso the most valuable contract in franchise history in December. The expectation was that he will be the every day first baseman that will spend the entire season in the middle of the lineup. Alonso is the New York Mets<\/a> career leader in home runs and is looking to bring that power to the Orioles. He put that power on full display in his spring opener with the club. Launching a home run in his third and final at bat of the day. The Orioles faithful was granted a sample of what to expect over the five years of his contract with the club.<\/p>\n The Orioles face off against the\u00a0Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> on Saturday at 1:05 PM at Ed Smith Stadium in Sarasota. The game will be the Orioles\u2019 second of the spring and the Pirates\u2019 first. The Orioles have announced Dean Kremer<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0as their starting pitcher.
