Mariana de Paula and Brazil\u2019s WBC Appearance<\/h2>\n

HOUSTON \u2014 When Brazil<\/a> clinched its spot in the World Baseball Classic by taking down China and beating Germany twice, Mariana de Paula didn\u2019t wait for the celebration to fade. She didn\u2019t even wait for the next morning.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt incredibly proud,\u201d she told Sport Relay<\/em> before Brazil\u2019s game against Great Britain<\/a>. Baseball isn\u2019t a headline sport in Brazil, and qualifying wasn\u2019t a fluke. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t an easy path \u2014 it was earned,\u201d she said. That same night, she emailed Major League Baseball with a simple message: she wanted to be Brazil\u2019s press officer when they arrived. \u201cI want to help them grow\u2026 help market this team\u2026 help these guys in every step of the way here.\u201d<\/p>\n

She\u2019s done exactly that.<\/p>\n

From Santos to the WBC<\/h4>\n

Born and raised in Santos, S\u00e3o Paulo (the state, not the city), Mariana grew up in a family of swimmers. Her brother attended the University of Hawaii on a swimming scholarship. She and her identical twin sister followed the same path, landing in Florida.<\/p>\n

Pensacola is where baseball found her. The local Double\u2011A ballpark became a regular stop. During her senior year, a friend working there asked if she wanted a job. She didn\u2019t know much about baseball, but she said yes. \u201cI loved working with the T\u2011ball kids,\u201d she said. The ballpark had a sign she still remembers: Every day is opening day. It stuck with her. \u201cFor us it looks like another day on the job, but for everybody else in the ballpark, it\u2019s an incredible memory.\u201d That was the moment she knew she wanted to stay in the sport.<\/p>\n

A PR Path That Led Back Home<\/h4>\n

Mariana\u2019s background is in public relations \u2014 a bachelor\u2019s degree in PR and a master\u2019s in sports management. After moving to San Francisco for another job, she found herself drawn to the ballpark again. She didn\u2019t have a team and didn\u2019t root for anyone. However, she loved the environment and the chance to help athletes the way she once was helped. She applied for a San Francisco Giants<\/a> internship in 2019 and stayed. Now she is the Media Relations Coordinator for the Giants.<\/p>\n

Working under Giants Vice President of Media Relations Matt Chisholm shaped her approach. \u201cIt\u2019s really the exact same role,\u201d she said, describing her work with Brazil. The notes, the coordination, the communication \u2014 all familiar. The difference is the jersey. \u201cI get to do it for my country.\u201d<\/p>\n

What an Automatic Bid Would Have Meant<\/h4>\n

Prior to Brazil\u2019s game against Great Britain March 9, Mariana didn\u2019t hide how she\u2019d feel if Brazil were to win and secure an automatic berth in the next WBC. \u201cIncredibly proud,\u201d she beamed. Avoiding another long wait to qualify would be huge. \u201cYou\u2019re going to see a lot of partying from these guys.\u201d She knows where Brazil stands in the baseball landscape. \u201cIt\u2019s nowhere near the other nations participating here,\u201d she explained, but the passion is real, and the community is larger than people realize. An automatic bid would have given the sport a boost back home.<\/p>\n

\u2026But It Went the Other Way<\/h4>\n

The loss didn\u2019t break her. Before the game, she predicted how she would have felt. \u201cDisappointed, because we know we\u2019re better than that,\u201d but she also noted the pride was going to remain. Many players have full\u2011time jobs and made sacrifices to be at the World Baseball Classic. One pitcher \u2014 Joseph Contreras<\/a><\/strong>, son of Jose \u2014 was a high school student in the Atlanta area who pitched in the World Baseball Classic on his spring break<\/em>. Their game against the United States<\/a> \u2014 where they took a 2\u20130 lead that stunned the ballpark \u2014 showed what they\u2019re capable of. \u201cIn a lot of ways, the job was accomplished,\u201d de Paula said. People watched, and people noticed.<\/p>\n

After the Final Out<\/h4>\n

With the loss to Great Britain, Brazil missed the automatic bid. But the pride de Paula described never wavered. \u201cOh, I will volunteer for sure,\u201d she said when asked about what would happen if Brazil were to qualify for the next WBC. Then she added, almost casually: \u201cI volunteered today already.\u201d<\/p>\n
