In another extra-innings thriller, the New York Mets<\/a> managed to walk it off against the Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> to seal a 4-3 triumph. With the wind blowing into Citi Field on Tuesday, Ronny Mauricio<\/a> hit a single over right field in his first at-bat of the season to score the winning run. \u201cIt was incredible. First at-bat of the year and to see the ball go over [the right fielder],\u201d he said during a postgame interview.<\/p>\n

Mauricio was called up from the minor leagues to replace Juan Soto<\/a>, who is out with a quad injury. He wasn\u2019t expected to receive much playing time, being utilized as another infielder with Brett Baty<\/a> and Jorge Polanco<\/a> battling injuries. But when the Mets needed someone to deliver, he answered the call.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe know what the situation is right now. I\u2019m here to help the team out in any way possible, and I\u2019ll be ready once my name is called,\u201d Mauricio added. His big moment propelled the Mets to their seventh win and fourth straight. This is the second time at home they needed to walk it off.<\/p>\n

Back and Forth Affair<\/h2>\n

Francisco Lindor<\/a> opened up the first inning with a single. Bo Bichette<\/a> and Polanco followed this up with singles. Baty scored Lindor and the first run with a sacrifice fly. Lindor hit a deep double in the second before an error from Corbin Carroll<\/a> allowed Francisco Alvarez<\/a> to reach home. Alvarez had reached base on a walk.<\/p>\n

However, Carroll hit a single to kickstart the Diamondbacks’ scoring run in the fifth. Geraldo Perdomo<\/a> reached base on a walk, while a pitch hit Gabriel Moreno<\/a>. Adrian Del Castillo<\/a> hit a two-RBI single to score Caroll and Perdomo. Nolan Arenado<\/a> hit an RBI double to bring Moreno home, putting the Diamondbacks ahead by a run.<\/p>\n

Polanco and Baty hit singles to start the eighth. Jared Young<\/a> scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly. With a chance to shut down the opposing offense, Devin Williams<\/a> forced three outs with two runners on base. The Mets went scoreless in the ninth before Luke Weaver<\/a> forced three outs in extra innings. This came before Mauricio walked it off in his first at-bat.<\/p>\n

What Went Right for the Mets<\/h2>\n

Lindor and Polanco contributed two hits, as Baty and Young plated runners. Mauricio, as previously mentioned, was able to seal the club\u2019s third win at home. Brooks Raley<\/a>, Williams, and Weaver were able to keep the Diamondbacks offense from scoring, combining for five strikeouts in three innings.<\/p>\n

What Went Wrong for the Mets<\/h2>\n

Freddy Peralta<\/a> had his ugliest start of the season since coming to Queens. Surrendering three hits, three runs, and three walks meant he earned an awfully high 4.80 ERA. This came as the lineup struggled to put the ball in play, with Tyrone Taylor<\/a> and Luis Robert Jr.<\/a> going without a hit.<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n

With the series opener behind them, the Mets will look to win the next two games against the Diamondbacks at Citi Field. David Peterson<\/a> will take the mound in Tuesday\u2019s game against Ryne Nelson<\/a>. The game is scheduled to start at 4:10 pm Eastern.<\/p>\n
