With Tuesday\u2019s series opener at Citi Field tied at three, New York Mets<\/a> closer Devin Williams<\/a><\/strong> gave up the go-ahead run to the Minnesota Twins<\/a>, resulting in his team losing their 12th straight game. The 5-3 loss to the Twins continues the Mets’ freefall down to the bottom of the National League standings.<\/p>\n Francisco Lindor<\/a><\/strong> put the Mets ahead early with a three-run home run. Righty Nolan McLean<\/a><\/strong> went 6 2\/3 innings, punching out 10 batters, only to give up a two-run home run. He also gave up the tying run before Williams surrendered the next two.<\/p>\n After both teams went scoreless in the first two innings, Mark Vientos<\/a><\/strong> hit a single in the third. Carson Benge<\/a><\/strong> hit into a force play, reaching base as Vientos was out at second. Benge swiped second before Marcus Semien<\/a><\/strong> walked. With two runners on, Lindor belted a three-run homer to right.<\/p>\n The Mets held a 3-0 lead until the Twins responded in the sixth. Matt Wallner<\/a><\/strong> hit a single, setting up a two-run home run by Byron Buxton<\/a><\/strong> two batters later. This ended McLean\u2019s shutout bid, as Kody Clemens<\/a><\/strong> hit a double off the Mets’ righty during the seventh. Luke Keaschall<\/a><\/strong> scored the tying run on an RBI single.<\/p>\n After a scoreless and quiet eighth inning, Williams came in with an opportunity to save the win. But he walked the first two batters, and it came back to haunt him.<\/p>\n Clemens, up next, dropped a bunt, trying to sacrifice the runners into scoring position. Vientos charged from first base, scooped it up, and fired to third, attempting to force the hustling James Outman<\/a><\/strong>. The throw was late, however, loading the bases. A single from Keaschall and bases-loaded walk by Wallner gave the Twins a 5\u20133 lead.<\/p>\n Cole Sands<\/a><\/strong> pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for the Twins, sealing the Mets’ fate.<\/p>\n Lindor hit a three-run home run, as Bo Bichette<\/a><\/strong> and Brett Baty<\/a><\/strong> recorded hits. McLean didn\u2019t give up a hit until the third inning, and he struck out 10 Twins.<\/p>\n No hitter other than Lindor recorded an RBI or an extra-base hit. McLean gave up a two-run blast to Buxton and the tying run to Keaschall. Williams notched his third blown save, forcing manager Carlos Mendoza<\/a><\/strong> to pull him after less than an inning.<\/p>\n With the 12-game losing streak still intact, the Mets need to find a way to snap it in the next two games of the series at Citi Field. Juan Soto<\/a><\/strong> will make his return from injury during Wednesday\u2019s game, as Clay Holmes<\/a><\/strong> will take the mound for the Mets.
