The New York Mets<\/a> announced ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers<\/a> that catcher Francisco Alvarez<\/strong><\/a> has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a torn meniscus he sustained during Tuesday\u2019s win over the Tigers. He will undergo surgery as soon as possible to give the team a better understanding of the severity and when he can return. He will almost certainly miss six to eight weeks and can even be shut down for the rest of this season. In a corresponding move, the Mets promoted Hayden Senger<\/strong><\/a> from Triple-A Syracuse.<\/p>\n

Yet Another Injury<\/h4>\n

Injuries have become all too common for this Mets team. Juan Soto<\/strong><\/a> missed 15 games due to a quad strain and dealt with forearm tightness. A quad injury has kept Francisco Lindor<\/a><\/strong> out of action, as he is expected to miss much of the first half of the season. Veterans Luis Robert Jr.<\/a><\/strong> and Jorge Polanco<\/strong><\/a> landed on the injured list due to separate back and ankle injuries.<\/p>\n

For Francisco Alvarez, this is his fourth time missing a large chunk of games since joining the Mets in 2022. Torn thumb ligaments sidelined him in his last two seasons, while he sustained a hamate fracture early last season. He suffered a torn meniscus in the middle of a sixth inning at bat against the Tigers, which forced him out of the ballgame.<\/p>\n

Before the game, Alvarez was slashing .241\/.317\/.393 on a .710 OPS with four home runs. He also held a seven-game hit streak going into Sunday\u2019s game. Injuries delayed his last two seasons, in which he recorded 11 home runs and more than 30 RBI.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou feel for the person and the human. He hasn\u2019t had the run of playing every day, going through struggles, and finding a way to get through it. For him, the past three years have always been injuries. He struggles, he gets hot, but then he gets hurt and misses significant time,\u201d manager Carlos Mendoza<\/a><\/strong> said.<\/p>\n

Next Man Up<\/h4>\n

With Francisco Alvarez out of action, the Mets will turn to Luis Torrens<\/strong><\/a> and Senger to hold down the fort behind the plate. Torrens drew a walk and hit an RBI single against the Tigers in place of Alvarez. In his last two seasons in Queens, he hit a combined eight home runs and 44 RBI.<\/p>\n

Senger has yet to play in the majors this season. Last year, he had 13 hits and four RBI in a limited role. He can get some playing time during Wednesday’s game against the Tigers.<\/p>\n
