In a lopsided start to the always competitive Subway Series, the New York Mets<\/a> dropped the opening game to the New York Yankees<\/a> 5-2 at Citi Field on Friday. Infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr.<\/a> led the way for the cross-town rival Yankees with three hits and two RBI. Juan Soto<\/a> lifted a ball out of the park for the Mets’ only home run. Rising star Cam Schlittler<\/a> struck out nine batters in six-plus innings, as Clay Holmes<\/a> gave up seven hits and four earned runs in four innings for the Mets.<\/p>\n

Mets-Yankees Game Summary<\/h2>\n

After a quiet first two innings, Ben Rice<\/a> hit a single to mount some momentum for the Yankees. Aaron Judge<\/a> followed up with a single before Cody Bellinger<\/a> hit an RBI double to score Rice. Chisholm took it a step further, knocking in a two-RBI double that scored Judge and Bellinger. This put the Yankees ahead 3-0 after three innings.<\/p>\n

Chisholm drew a walk in the fifth, as rookie Spencer Jones<\/a> hit an RBI single to put his team ahead 4-0. The Mets remained off the scoreboard until Soto sent a ball to deep center field for his sixth home run of the season. Brett Baty<\/a> then drew a walk, as Marcus Semien<\/a> hit a double. But as the Mets were starting to get into a rhythm, rookie A.J. Ewing<\/a> hit a flyout.<\/p>\n

Rice hit his 15th home run of the season to lead off the ninth, increasing the Yankees’ lead to four. Soto drew a walk in the bottom half of the inning, but was thrown out trying to steal second. MJ Melendez<\/a> singled to right field, as Baty scored him on an RBI single. Still, this was simply not enough for the Mets to dethrone the Yankees, who comfortably sealed the four-run Subway Series victory.<\/p>\n

What Went Right for the Mets<\/h2>\n

Soto has been one of the Mets’ few beacons of consistency, and he delivered with a home run and a walk. Baty had two hits and scored a run. Austin Warren<\/a> and Tobias Myers<\/a> kept the Yankees off base, combining for three strikeouts and only one hit.<\/p>\n

What Went Wrong for the Mets<\/h2>\n

The Mets entered this year\u2019s installment of the Subway Series on a three-game win streak. Young studs Carson Benge<\/a> and Ewing played key roles in those wins, but they went hitless in their first game against the Yankees. The same went for Bo Bichette<\/a> and Mark Vientos<\/a>, who were kept off base after having productive three-game stretches.<\/p>\n

However, Holmes was the main outlier. The former Yankees reliever gave up four earned runs and seven hits against his former team. This questionable performance gave him a 2.39 ERA, while he ended with eight strikeouts.<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h2>\n

The Mets will have the chance to put the series-opening loss behind them in Saturday\u2019s second game. Carlos Rodon<\/a> will make his second start for the Yankees. The Mets have yet to announce who will be starting. Game two of the Subway Series is scheduled to start at 7:15 pm Eastern from Citi Field.<\/p>\n
