As they are attempting to rebound from a 22-28 start, the New York Mets \u00a0<\/a>fell flat against the Miami Marlins<\/a>, 10\u20134, Sunday. Over the course of Memorial Day weekend, their bats scored two runs, while their pitching staff gave up 10 runs to the Marlins. This culminated in the Mets being swept by the Marlins, who now hold a 25\u201329 record.<\/p>\n

Mets Fall Flat<\/h4>\n

The Mets had some momentum on their side going into the rest of their road trip against the Marlins. Outfielder Juan Soto<\/strong><\/a> blasted a deep solo home run to start the series opener. But then, the rest of their lineup went silent, with no one else registering a hit. The Marlins, on the other hand, stole the win by scoring the go ahead run in the fourth.<\/p>\n

In the second game, the Marlins scored four runs off righty Freddy Peralta<\/strong><\/a>. Still, Peralta tossed seven innings and struck out nine batters on a 3.52 ERA. The Mets only run came on an RBI single from Mark Vientos<\/strong><\/a>. He had two hits, while Tyrone Taylor<\/strong><\/a> also recorded a hit.<\/p>\n

After falling flat in consecutive games, neither team was able to score for the first nine innings on Sunday. In the ninth inning, closer Devin Williams<\/strong><\/a> gave up a double before walking Liam Hicks<\/strong><\/a>. Xavier Edwards<\/strong><\/a> was then intentionally walked, and with the bases loaded Heriberto Hernandez<\/strong><\/a> hit a game-winning grand slam to complete the series sweep.<\/p>\n

Quick Turnaround<\/h4>\n

The Mets struggled against the Marlins due to their lineups inability to put the ball in play. But, they don\u2019t have much time to reflect on the past with their next homestead starting on Monday against the Cincinnati Reds<\/a>.<\/p>\n

During that forgettable three-game stretch, the pitching staff showed some signs of resilience. Sean Manaea<\/strong><\/a>, for instance, struck out three batters without allowing a run to score in three-plus innings of relief. Rookie Jonah Tong<\/strong><\/a> went three innings without surrendering a hit or run. Peralta went seven innings for his longest start since joining the Mets this offseason. Christian Scott<\/a><\/strong> notched five strikeouts without allowing a run in five-plus innings on the mound.<\/p>\n

Therefore, if the pitching staff can provide quality outings then the Mets will have one less issue to deal with. Still, their main concern is to ensure that their lineup can perform at a higher level. This can help give them more confidence, as they ease into their Memorial Day game against the Reds at Citi Field on Monday.<\/p>\n
