In a one-for-one trade, the New York Mets<\/a> sent lefty David Peterson<\/strong><\/a> to the Chicago Cubs<\/a> for prospect Cole Mathis<\/strong><\/a> on Wednesday night, as first reported by Jeff Passan<\/a> of ESPN<\/em>. The deal comes after the Mets lost three straight games to the Cubs, with the series finale being on Thursday. Peterson, meanwhile, had a record of 3\u20136 to start the season and gave up 51 hits, 46 earned runs and 30 walks with a career high 6.09 ERA.<\/p>\n

David Peterson On The Move<\/h4>\n

The Mets tenure of the veteran southpaw is defined by his prolific start and sour ending. Drafted out of Oregon in the first round of the 2017 MLB draft, Peterson made his debut in 2020. In nine starts, he went 6\u20132 with 40 strikeouts and a 3.44 ERA. In his next three seasons, David Peterson continued to struggle, having a 5.54 ERA and 5.03 ERA on two separate occasions.<\/p>\n

But, in 2024 he began to turn around his career. He owned a record of 10\u20133 with 101 strikeouts and a 2.90 ERA. His efforts helped the Mets reach the 2024 NLCS. In 2025, Peterson took larger strides, going 9\u20136 with 150 strikeouts in 168 innings. The standout numbers contributed to him making his first All-Star appearance.<\/p>\n

However his Mets tenure went downhill again this season. He posted a 3-6 record and gave up 51 hits, 46 earned runs and 30 walks with a career high 6.09 ERA. He lost his spot in the rotation and ended up being used as a long-term relief option.<\/p>\n

Now, David Peterson joins the Cubs, who are 43\u201337. A change of scenery can be what he needs to once again turn his season around.<\/p>\n

Mets Acquire Mathis<\/h4>\n

Mathias, the No. 13 ranked prospect in the Cubs system, is a versatile infielder with high potential. In two minor league seasons, he recorded 63 hits, 21 doubles, 53 RBI and 13 home runs. He\u2019s slashing .248\/.371\/.508 with a .879 OPS. He brings more production to the Mets farm system, which has already produced multiple proven rookies.<\/p>\n
