The Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> entered the All-Star break riding high at 54-43, two games behind the Atlanta Braves<\/a> in the NL East<\/span>. Six players headed to the Midsummer Classic at Citizens Bank Park. The comeback story from a 9-19 start felt complete.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then the second half happened.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Phillies have dropped eight of ten games since returning from the break<\/span>. Their second-half record sits at 3-6. In five of those six defeats, the offense managed one run or fewer<\/span>. The Phillies have lost three straight series to the New York Mets<\/a>, Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>, and New York Yankees<\/a><\/span>. A 1-0 loss to the Yankees on July 24 dropped them to 2-5 post-break, but they snapped a four-game losing streak with an 11-4 win on July 26<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The offensive numbers tell a sad story. The Phillies posted a .278 on-base percentage in those first seven games back. Their team batting average sits at .236 for the season, ranking 23rd in MLB<\/span>. They’ve scored 449 runs while allowing 467, a run differential of -10<\/span>. The Phillies are 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position in the first two games of the Yankees series alone<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Phillies<\/span>\u00a0have squandered elite pitching performances during this stretch.\u00a0<\/span>Zack Wheeler<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Jes\u00fas Luzardo<\/span>\u00a0have delivered quality starts only to watch the offense disappear<\/span>. Luzardo took a tough-luck 1-0 loss on July 24 despite matching zeros with Yankees starter Cam Schlittler for three innings<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Phillies wild card position slipping to Cubs<\/span><\/h3>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>Chicago Cubs<\/span><\/a> have surged ahead in the National League wild card race. They sit at 59-46, holding the top wild card spot with a two-and-a-half-game lead over the Phillies<\/span>. The Phillies hold the second wild card position at 57-49<\/span>, but their lead over the chasing pack has shrunk to two games over the streaking Arizona Diamondbacks, winners of 10 of their last 14.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cubs own a critical tiebreaker over the Phillies. They have won three series in a row while the Phillies have lost four straight. The <\/span>Cubs<\/span> have outplayed the Phillies across the board, with a +52 run differential compared to the Phillies’ -10 mark<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Braves extend division lead over Phillies<\/span><\/h3>\n

The <\/span>Braves<\/span> have widened their NL East advantage during the Phillies collapse. They now lead the division at 61-43, 5 1\/2 games ahead of the Phillies<\/span>. The Braves have won eight of their last eleven games and stabilized their position atop the NL East.<\/span><\/p>\n

Entering the break, the Phillies trailed the Braves by two games<\/span>. That gap has ballooned to 5 1\/2 games during the skid<\/span>. The Phillies have lost three games in the standings to the Braves since the break. Of great concern, the Braves’ run differential of +106 dwarfs the Phillies’ -10 mark.<\/span><\/p>\n

The underlying metrics expose deeper problems, as the Phillies rank 23rd in batting average and 26th in on-base percentage<\/span>. Their .399 slugging percentage ranks 16th<\/span>. The Phillies have struck out 851 times, third-most in baseball.<\/span><\/p>\n

Manager Don Mattingly acknowledged the offensive struggles after Saturday’s loss. “We are in a spot where we haven’t scored and we haven’t swung the bats great,” Mattingly said<\/span>. “But we gotta continue to work and keep fighting through it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Time is running out for the Phillies to right the ship. The trade deadline approaches, and the Phillies’ weaknesses \u2014 on-base percentage, fifth starter production, and run creation \u2014 have been exposed for everyone to see. Their wild card cushion has evaporated, and the division is slipping further out of reach.<\/span><\/p>\n
