New York Mets<\/a> president of baseball operations David Stearns used the time before the August 3 trade deadline to reconstruct the team\u2019s roster. He did this through trading veterans in return for prospects, who could blossom into major league talent. In total, the Mets traded eight starters to acquire 13 prospects.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to thank the players we traded over the last week. This isn\u2019t where we wanted to be, but everyone whom we traded gave a tremendous amount to this organization,\u201d Stearns said during Monday\u2019s press conference. \u201cWe think we added a tremendous amount of talent that will help us going forward. It was the right thing to do when we were at this point. Our goal is to move the organization in the best way possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Creating Gaps<\/h4>\n

Although Stearns reconstructed the Mets for the future, there are multiple holes left in the roster. Some of the gaps are in the pitching staff which occurred as a result of trading veterans Clay Holmes<\/a><\/strong>, Freddy Peralta<\/strong><\/a> and Luke Weaver<\/strong><\/a> among others.<\/p>\n

While Peralta had an unsuccessful tenure in Queens, Holmes was on pace to become their ace. The veteran right-hander was 4\u20134 in nine outings with 45 strikeouts and a 2.39 ERA. Although his production was brought to a standstill by a broken fibula, he was making progress towards a full recovery.<\/p>\n

Weaver, on the other hand, emerged as the Mets’ most consistent relief option in a setup role. With 45 strikeouts and a 1.84 ERA, he was ranked the No. 1 setup man in the NL for most of the season. Yet, his absence creates another gap that David Stearns believes can be filled with prospects and from acquiring talent during next offseason.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally tough decision. Not straightforward. Had a lot of internal discussion and debate. Ultimately, the return we were able to get we thought made sense, were in the best interest of the organization, recognizing that at this time of year, you\u2019re often able to get really good talent back for relief pitching,\u201d Stearns added.\u201cWe understand that we\u2019re going to have to go out and acquire relievers in the offseason in different ways to get our bullpen to where we expect it to be in 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n

Acquiring Talent<\/h4>\n

On the contrary, David Stearns making these moves gave the Mets many highly touted prospects. Infielder Jefferson Rojas<\/a><\/strong> is at the top of the list due to being ranked No. 63 within MLB Pipeline\u2019s Top 100. He instantly became the Mets No. 1 prospect and could play short, second and third base. He could join the major league roster by the start of next season.<\/p>\n

Sammy Stafura<\/a><\/strong> is the next best prospect the Mets received. Stafura joins the Mets system as their No. 10 ranked prospect and a versatile fielder. Still, some believe that it will take at least another two years for Stafura to join the main roster.<\/p>\n

\u201cReally exciting and well-rounded player. [Rojas] has experience at all three positions. Well-rounded offensive profile, he\u2019s done exactly what you want to see a player do,\u201d Stearns continued. \u201cThe defense is the first thing that jumps off the board. [Stafura] can help you win ballgames in a variety of ways. When you talk about a power-hitting player who can play shortstop, that\u2019s big.\u201d<\/p>\n
