The New York Mets<\/a> claimed infielder Gabriel Arias<\/strong><\/a> off of waivers from the Cleveland Guardians<\/a> before Friday\u2019s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a>. The acquisition comes after the Guardians designated Arias for assignment earlier this week and dropped their last three games to the Mets, who have won three of their last five since the August 3 trade deadline when they traded seven players during a three-day stretch.<\/p>\n

Mets Claim Gabriel Arias<\/h4>\n

Arias began his stint with the Guardians in 2022. He spent more than four years with the AL Central franchise as a versatile infielder. He received opportunities at shortstop, first and third base.<\/p>\n

Through 42 appearances in 2025, Gabriel Arias had 31 hits, three doubles, five home runs and 11 RBI. His last game with multiple hits came on July 11, while his last homer occurred on July 9. Simply, his numbers were not enough to remain on the team.<\/p>\n

However, joining the Mets gives him an opportunity to turn his career around. The Mets have yet to reveal when Arias will play his first game with them. Still, they are in need of a consistent first baseman due to Mark Vientos<\/a><\/strong> being sidelined with a hand injury and Jorge Polanco<\/strong><\/a> struggling at times.<\/p>\n

Limited Success<\/h4>\n

Gabriel Arias put together his best season in 2023, recording 66 hits, 15 doubles, 10 home runs and 26 RBI on a .210 average. He slowed down in his next campaign, producing 34 hits, nine doubles, three home runs and 15 RBI. This came as the Guardians reached the 2024 ALCS after taking down the Detroit Tigers<\/a> in the ALDS. Yet, Arias didn\u2019t see the field during the playoff run.<\/p>\n

Arias performed better in 2024, tallying 95 hits, 25 doubles, 11 home runs and 54 RBI. He also made his postseason debut against the Tigers, coming along to record an RBI single in game one of the AL Wild Card round. The Guardians, however, were eliminated from the playoffs following a loss in Game Three of the series.<\/p>\n
