Any ordinary ornithologist knows that. It has taken decades for executives in charge of Baltimore&#8217;s Baseball Birds to recognize what was once a given fact.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Orioles&#8217; farm system is producing pitching prospects as well as position players. For the first time in years, the team&#8217;s outlook appears as bright as the vibrant colors on a real-to-life flying oriole.<\/p>\n<p>Stuck in the baseball meat grinder known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/al-east\/\">American League East<\/a> with the offensive-oriented <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/yankees\/\">New York Yankees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/blue-jays\/\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/rays\/\">Tampa Bay Rays<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/red-sox\/\">Boston Red Sox<\/a>, the Orioles made great strides in 2022 and hope to continue moving up this year. They went 83-79 for their first winning season since 2016. That drought included three of the worst years in club history. In 2018, 2019, and 2021 they went a combined 153-333 (.315). Horrendous!<\/p>\n<h3>Pitching was Key for Baltimore<\/h3>\n<p>Improved pitching, partly the by-product of moving the left-field wall out of band-box territory to a reasonable length from home plate, was key. The team ERA went from an unsightly 5.84 with more than 116 hits allowed than innings in 2021 to 3.97 and 27 fewer hits than innings pitched. Progress!<\/p>\n<p>A fine bullpen helped. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezjo02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jorge Lopez<\/a><\/strong> had 19 saves, a 1.68 ERA, and made the all-star team before being dealt to the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/twins\/\"><strong>Minnesota Twins<\/strong><\/a> for more needed prospects. Gigantic <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bautife01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Felix Bautista<\/a><\/strong> (6-foot-8, 285 pounds) was a huge force in a setup role and replaced Lopez as closer, getting 15 saves, a 2.19 ERA, and 88 strikeouts in 65 2\/3 innings while allowing only 38 hits. Little lefty <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perezci01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cionel Perez<\/a><\/strong> was big (7-1, 1.40 ERA) and right-handers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/akinke01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Keegan Akin<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=bakerbr01,baker-003bry&amp;search=Bryan+Baker&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bryan Baker<\/a>,<\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatedi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dillon Tate<\/a><\/strong> helped. He got an $8.19 million signing bonus last summer, then batted .297 in 20 games in the low minors. This spring he has hit .385 in 14 games. That&#8217;s all more good news than the franchise has accumulated overall for decades.<\/p>\n<h2>Starting With Starters<\/h2>\n<p><a id=\"b_7NXYlLTqVb741pA3z79g\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/850087200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'b_7NXYlLTqVb741pA3z79g',sig:'4AhddYYTdbeem8Kyljjtvvzm77j09u56o_ol8H06Kc4=',w:'479px',h:'594px',items:'850087200',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\nFrom 1960 through 1985, the Orioles had the best winning percentage of\u00a0<em>all<\/em><em>\u00a0teams<\/em> in the four major sports: MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL. Baltimore had a winning record in 24 of those 26 seasons. In the 36 years since, their fans have gotten to enjoy only 10 seasons above .500. The reason: a move to a new ballpark in 1992, bizarre ownership, and management decisions along with poor pitching. Those three factors are all intertwined.<\/p>\n<p>Manager\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/richapa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Paul Richards<\/a><\/strong> insisted the organization sign every pitching prospect it could find once he added the general manager duties to his plate in the late 1950s. The Orioles spent a lot of money and got great results. Some got away. They lost future AL Cy Young winner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chancde01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dean Chance<\/a><\/strong> and talented lefty\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/belinbo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bo Belinsky<\/a><\/strong> to the expansion <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/angels\/\">Los Angeles Angels<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the best (or worst) of all, legendary lefty <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=dalkow001ste\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Steve Dalkowski<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>blew out his arm in spring training just as he was about to make the team after years of being the wildest, fastest pitcher <em>ever<\/em>. How fast and how wild? In 1960, he fanned 262 in 170 innings and gave up a scant 105 hits. He also <em>walked<\/em> 262, leading to a 7-15 record and 5.14 ERA. Though only 309 feet down both lines, the outfield expanded quickly and the power alleys in both left and right center were among the deepest in baseball. In the early years, outfielders could seemingly roam for days to track down fly balls.<\/p>\n<p>That was great for speedy center-fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dierich01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-03-17_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chuck Diering<\/a><\/strong> in 1954. With it being 445 feet to left and right center&#8211; and with no fence in center (a 3-foot-high hedge at 458 feet was there instead), Baltimore hit only 19 homers at home that year after moving from St. Louis and compiling an awful 54-100 record.<\/p>\n<p>While playing through 1991 in Memorial Stadium, where the dimensions in left and right-center were &#8220;scaled back&#8221; to 378 feet, the Orioles placed 35 pitchers on the AL All-Star team. Since moving into Camden Yards in 1992, they have had 12 all-star hurlers. That is 35 all-star pitchers in 38 years at the old place and only 12 in the 32 years at the new ballpark.<\/p>\n<h2>24 x 20 = Winning<\/h2>\n<p>From 1963 until 1984, Orioles pitchers won 20 or more in a season 24 times. Since then, zilch.
