Cubs 11, Diamondbacks (SS) 1<\/h2>\n

MESA, Ariz. (Mar. 23) \u2014 A four-run outburst in the seventh, followed by another one in the eighth, allowed the Chicago Cubs<\/a> to run away with an 11\u20131 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> in Cactus League action Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The Pitchers \u2014 Ryne Nelson (Diamondbacks) and Hayden Wesneski (Cubs)<\/h3>\n

Diamondbacks right-hander Ryne Nelson<\/strong><\/a>, one of the finalists for the fifth rotation spot, tossed 4 2\/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out three.<\/p>\n

Cubs right-hander Hayden Wesneski<\/strong><\/a>, also competing for a spot in the rotation, lasted five innings. \u201cToday (was) probably the best I felt (all spring),\u201d Wesneski said. \u201cThe results probably weren\u2019t the best of the spring, but I felt good. I was commanding the ball.\u201d He allowed one unearned run on four hits while walking two and striking out five. The unearned run scored when Wesneski made an errant pickoff throw to first, allowing speedy Diamondbacks right fielder Corbin Carroll<\/a><\/strong> to score from third.<\/p>\n

For Wesneski, making the Opening Day rotation would be incredible. \u201cIt\u2019s what you dream of,\u201d he said with an entranced smile. \u201cOpening Day is special. There\u2019s no other way to put it.\u201d Wesneski said he spoke to Oakland Athletics<\/a> lefty JP Sears<\/a><\/strong> about it, and JP \u2014 who spent Opening Day 2022 with the New York Yankees<\/a> \u2014 said, \u201cDude, there\u2019s nothing like it. It\u2019s crazy.\u201d Wesneski added, \u201cI can\u2019t imagine it would be worse in Wrigley.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n

The Diamondbacks will face the Cincinnati Reds Friday afternoon at Salt River Fields. Right-hander Zac Gallen<\/a><\/strong> will take the hill for the Diamondbacks against Reds righty Hunter Greene<\/a><\/strong>. The Cubs have a pair of split-squad games Friday, at home against the Texas Rangers<\/a> and away against the Cleveland Guardians<\/a>. First pitch against the Rangers will be at 1:05 pm, with Cubs righty Marcus Stroman<\/a><\/strong> facing Rangers lefty Andrew Heaney<\/a><\/strong>. Adrian Sampson<\/a><\/strong> will take the hill against Zach Plesac<\/strong><\/a> of the Guardians in a battle of righties, with first pitch at 6:05 pm.<\/p>\n
