He came to see a right-hander by the name of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/passecl01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Claude Passeau<\/a><\/strong>, who was pitching for Des Moines that night. Somebody told him about me and I threw for him in the morning. He never did see Passeau.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Passeau went 20-11 for Des Moines in 1935 at age 26, signed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2023\/03\/30\/pittsburgh-pirates-2023-season-preview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Pittsburgh Pirates<\/strong><\/a>, and had a 162-150 record for three National League teams through 1947.<\/p>\n<p>Slapnicka wasn\u2019t sorry he passed on Passeau for the fabulous Feller, however.<\/p>\n<h3>Two Iowa Farmboys<\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"CUCaQQ4QSfdKt4j40vpPgg\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/516022326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'CUCaQQ4QSfdKt4j40vpPgg',sig:'7bVdLRwReImKlpcyF-na2w_NctC7M1vbv2t2465-aWI=',w:'594px',h:'466px',items:'516022326',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\n&#8220;I liked Cy right from the start,\u201d Feller said. \u201cHe grew up on an Iowa farm, just like me. He knew baseball, knew pitching, and helped me with a lot of things in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cyril Charles Slapnicka was born in 1886, four years before the legendary <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngcy01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Cy Young<\/a><\/strong> began his career in Cleveland. After six years in the minors, he was called up by the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/cubs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chicago Cubs<\/strong><\/a> in 1911 after going 26-7 that summer for Rockford (Ill.). He went 0-2 and was sent back down for seven more years. Slapnicka won 25 games at Double-A Milwaukee in 1913 but didn\u2019t get back to the majors until age 32 with Pittsburgh in 1918. The right-hander went 1-4 for a big-league career record of 1-6 and only 13 strikeouts in 73 1\/3 innings.<\/p>\n<p>Slapnicka also dabbled in show business. Billed as \u201cSlappie,\u201d he performed as a juggler, using his athleticism to toss and twirl tables, chairs, cigar boxes and other unusually sized items. At one time, the Milwaukee club sought an injunction to keep him off the stage, fearing an injury.<\/p>\n<p>Feller was born Nov. 3, 1918 \u2013 four months after Slapnicka&#8217;s only big-league win, a glorious complete game over the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/2023\/03\/30\/season-preview-2023-san-francisco-giants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>New York Giants<\/strong><\/a> on July 5. Sixteen years later, the two met at Feller\u2019s farmhouse in Van Meter, Iowa \u2013 shortly before Slapnicka was named general manager in Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>Feller dazzled him with his fastball. Slapnicka in turn enticed the rugged farm boy to sign by offering him a baseball signed by the entire Cleveland team \u2013 and one dollar.<\/p>\n<div class=\"getty embed image\"><\/div>\n<h3>Babe and Lou<\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"GPBxSo2WS-loEEdRGNHodQ\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/517324260\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'GPBxSo2WS-loEEdRGNHodQ',sig:'VejpQSYmNdxJhEv125hV8cuaD2taDqCWvVtVzdTUn0A=',w:'450px',h:'594px',items:'517324260',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\n\u201cI have no idea what became of that baseball, but at the time it was pretty special to a kid like me,\u201d Feller said. \u201cThe only ball I have at my museum is one signed by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ruthba01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Babe Ruth<\/a><\/strong> that he gave me when I was a kid. He was on a barnstorming tour \u2013 The Bustin\u2019 Babes against the Larrapin\u2019 Lous. Ruth and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gehrilo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lou Gehrig<\/a><\/strong> coming to town was big news.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Feller coming to Cleveland was special, too \u2013 and controversial. A few years before he died in 1979 at age 93, Slapnicka told the story to Russ Schneider, then the long-time baseball beat writer at <em>The Plain Dealer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had heard about this kid pitcher living not too far from my home and went over to see him,\u201d Schneider quotes Slapnicka in his book, <em>The Cleveland Indians Encyclopedia.<\/em> \u201cI watched a couple pitches from the first-base line and got the feeling this was something extra. So I moved behind the backstop and sat on an automobile bumper for six innings. It must have been uncomfortable, but I never noticed. All I knew was this was a kid pitcher I had to get. He was something special. His fastball was fast and fuzzy; it didn\u2019t go in a straight line; it wiggled and shot around. I didn\u2019t know then that he was smart and had the heart of a lion, but I knew I was looking at an arm the likes of which you see only once in a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slapnicka saw it again when he went to Florida to scout and sign three kids \u2013 catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/browndi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dick Brown<\/a><\/strong>, his shortstop brother <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=brownla01,brownla02&amp;search=Larry+Brown&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Larry Brown<\/a><\/strong> and a gangly left-hander whose fastball was nearly as dazzling as that fired by Feller. That was Herb Score.<\/p>\n<h3>Sign on a Napkin<\/h3>\n<p>Decades earlier, Slapnicka simply could not contain his hyperbole over Feller.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGentlemen, I have found the greatest young pitcher I ever saw,\u201d he told team directors at a meeting back in Cleveland. \u201cI suppose this sounds like the same old stuff, but this boy will be one of the greatest pitchers the world has ever known.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slapnicka just had to have Feller for the Indians \u2013 although it meant breaking the rules to get him.<\/p>\n<p>Feller signed the back of a napkin, dated July 22, 1935. Slapnicka listed the team as Cleveland&#8217;s farm club at Fargo-Moorhead (N.D.). The agreement read: \u201cThe Fargo club agrees to allow Robt. Feller to visit his folks at any time during the 1936 season, also to invite Robt. Feller\u2019s folks to visit him at Fargo during the summer of 1936 at the expense of the Fargo baseball club. The Fargo club has no objection to Robt. Feller playing basketball at any time. For a consideration of one dollar paid to Robt. Feller, this agreement is declared valid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Said Feller: \u201cI was still in high school and wanted to play for the basketball team, so we put that in there.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Bullet Bob<\/h3>\n<p>Slapnicka then transferred the \u201ccontract\u201d to New Orleans and then to Cleveland without the teenager having to report to either team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I came to Cleveland after high school let out in 1936 and worked out with the Indians,\u201d Feller recalled. \u201cI pitched for the Cleveland Rosenblums, which was the top amateur team in the area. Then I worked three innings against the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/cardinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>St. Louis Cardinals<\/strong><\/a> and did pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pretty good? He struck out eight, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durocle01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Leo Durocher<\/a><\/strong> twice and all-stars <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martipe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pepper Martin<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colliri02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ripper Collins<\/a><\/strong> in that game on July 6.<\/p>\n<p>Feller made his big-league debut in relief on July 19 at Washington. He got his first career win on Aug. 23 against the<a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/orioles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong> St. Louis Browns<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 striking out 15. That was only two shy of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/deandi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dizzy Dean<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s then-MLB record in the 4-1 win. His name and picture graced newspapers and magazines all across America.<\/p>\n<h3>Breaking the Rules<\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"xgjeHYHeQ_h91VjJJr9Eag\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/72725911\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'xgjeHYHeQ_h91VjJJr9Eag',sig:'qbS9prQ2QWlu_dLnJi9LCa_ql-kVBznbmxcGZ8YDcTI=',w:'518px',h:'594px',items:'72725911',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\nThree days earlier, Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/bullpen\/Kenesaw_Landis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Kenesaw Mountain Landis<\/strong><\/a> began investigating Feller\u2019s signing. Lee Keyser, owner of the Des Moines team in the Western League, wanted Feller. He protested that Cleveland had broken baseball&#8217;s rule of signing schoolboys to major-league contracts. Landis made it thunderingly clear he did not believe Slapnicka, considered the signed napkin \u201ca coverup\u201d and fined the club $7,500. He asked Feller if he wanted to become a free agent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Slapnicka broke the rules,&#8221; Feller said. &#8220;But my dad wanted me to pitch for Cleveland. So did I. I told the commissioner I wanted to stay and he let me do it. It was a good decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"Tnu7UJ0oQHpSpjLoqvXbyw\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/515585864\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'Tnu7UJ0oQHpSpjLoqvXbyw',sig:'H1ZdMs_e7EkDr9whl6ErXr2gTfnT6hTj_bkQ8d3Coc8=',w:'594px',h:'437px',items:'515585864',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><br \/>\nSlapnicka similarly signed first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/henrito01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tommy Henrich<\/a><\/strong>. Given the same options by the commissioner, Henrich chose to sign with the<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/yankees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> New York Yankees<\/a>. <\/strong>He hit .282 with 183 homers and 795 RBI through 1950.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Slappie&#8221; later slapped the rules to get Boudreau, a two-sport star at the University of Illinois. Boudreau turned down a minor-league deal from the Cubs because he wanted to stay in school. He refuted Slapnicka too. The shrewd GM gave Boudreau&#8217;s father some money, believing this would not alter the young shortstop&#8217;s amateur status. Boudreau&#8217;s stepfather, unhappy he didn&#8217;t get a cent, told the Big Ten. Lou had his athletic scholarship voided.<\/p>\n<p>Slapnicka wrote to the NCAA, saying it was his fault and not Boudreau&#8217;s, but the damage had been done. Boudreau signed with Cleveland while continuing to attend college in the fall and winter to get his degree.<\/p>\n<h3>What Might Have Been<\/h3>\n<p>In 1936, Slapnicka signed speedy Oklahoma outfielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alexahu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hugh Alexander<\/a><\/strong>. There were no contract shenanigans. The youngster had defeated the legendary (Cleveland native) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/biography\/Jesse-Owens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Jesse Owens<\/strong><\/a> in high school track meets. Then he put up outrageous numbers in two years in the minors. In his first year, he batted .348 with 28 homers and 102 RBI. Promoted a level, Alexander hit .344 with 27 homers and 88 RBI in only 79 games to earn a call to Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>In his first game, Alexander got his only career hit off <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/white-sox\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Chicago White Sox<\/strong><\/a> lefty <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leeth01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Thornton Lee<\/a><\/strong>, a single. He went 1-for-11 for the season. Tragedy struck during the off-season when he lost a hand in an oil rig accident. Slapnicka immediately hired Alexander at age 20 as the youngest scout in baseball history.<\/p>\n<p>His first signing was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reynoal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-05_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Allie Reynolds<\/a><\/strong>. The big-right-hander went 181-107 over 13 seasons (1942-54) for Cleveland and the Yankees. Alexander later scouted for the White Sox, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/dodgers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/phillies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Philadelphia Phillies<\/strong><\/a>, and Cubs in a 60-year career.
