Padres 7, Diamondbacks 5<\/strong><\/h2>\n

PHOENIX, Apr. 23 \u2014 The San Diego Padres<\/a> beat the Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a>, 7\u20135, Sunday afternoon in front of 23,655 fans with a closed roof at Chase Field. Yu Darvish<\/a><\/strong> with his breaking ball and splitter working did just enough to get the win. He pitched 5 2\/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits and five strikeouts before leaving with an injury.<\/p>\n

Walks and Big Hits Give Padres Early Lead over Diamondbacks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The Padres led off with Fernando Tatis Jr.<\/a><\/strong>, who singled, as did Juan Soto<\/a><\/strong>, advancing Tatis to third. Manny Machado<\/a> reached on a fielder’s choice out, as first baseman Pavin Smith<\/a> threw to third baseman Evan Longoria<\/a><\/strong>. After a long challenge from Padres Manager Bob Melvin<\/a><\/strong>, it was ruled Tatis Jr. was out.<\/p>\n

A walk loaded the bases for Jake Cronenworth<\/a><\/strong>, who hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Soto. Matt Carpenter<\/a><\/strong> hit a bases-clearing double to make it 3-0. Drey Jameson<\/a> walked both Ha-Seong Kim<\/a><\/strong> and Trent Grisham<\/a><\/strong>. Austin Nola<\/a><\/strong>, the number nine hitter, struck out. But after a 43-pitch top of the first from Jameson, the Padres led, 3-0.<\/p>\n

Jameson left after one inning, being replaced by Anthony Misiewicz<\/a><\/strong> for the top of the second. In his last 4 2\/3 innings, Jameson has thrown 114 pitches. Assistant Pitching Coach\/Minor League Pitching Coordinator Barry Enright<\/a><\/strong> spent a significant amount of time talking to him in the dugout.<\/p>\n

Cronenworth tripled, his first of the season, on a sharp line drive to center to lead off the third. He came home on a sacrifice fly by Carpenter to make it 4-0. Kim and Grisham flied to right for the second and third outs.<\/p>\n
