Manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lovulto01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Torey Lovullo<\/a><\/strong> \u201cdidn\u2019t love\u201d Chafin calling off first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkech02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christian Walker<\/a><\/strong> and catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morenga01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gabriel Moreno<\/a><\/strong> to snag the foul ball. \u201cIn fact, I don\u2019t love it at all, but he caught the ball, so I\u2019ll take the out,\u201d Lovullo said. Walker, however, surprised reporters by telling them that he \u201cfelt real comfortable\u201d with Chafin motoring to the track to make the catch. \u201cThat guy power-shags in the outfield every day,\u201d Walker said with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been my dream to make a Top Ten play,\u201d the always jovial Chafin told reporters. \u201cObviously, that\u2019s not even close. But I\u2019m always ready to jump off the mound and try to make a play. (Walker) was playing deep\u2026I saw that when I came set before the pitch. He was way back and would be coming in full speed at the rail. His infield single brought Smith in for the second run.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals tied it up in the top of the third on a double to right by first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pasquvi01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vinnie Pasquantino<\/a><\/strong> and follow-up single by catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/perezsa02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Salvador Perez<\/a><\/strong>. A pair of walks in the bottom of the third \u2014 a leadoff walk by left fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carroco02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Corbin Carroll<\/a><\/strong> and one-out walk by designated hitter Lourdes Gurriel Jr. \u2014 allowed the Diamondbacks to retake the lead. Carroll scored on a single to right by Smith, while Gurriel \u2014 who went first to third on the single \u2014 scored on a groundout to third by Moreno.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals made the score 4\u20133 by scoring one more off Henry. However, it was a runner bequeathed to left-handed reliever <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nelsoky01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kyle Nelson<\/a><\/strong>. A single by Pasquantino and double by Perez teamed to plate Olivares.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTommy was just okay,\u201d Lovullo said. \u201cHe didn&#8217;t necessarily show great command. And he was just grinding it out into that fifth inning.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>The Crazy Eighth<\/h3>\n<p>The score remained 4\u20133 until the top of the eighth. Reliever <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=castrmi01,castro002mig&amp;search=Miguel+Castro&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Miguel Castro<\/a><\/strong>, who entered the game and recorded the last out of the top of the seventh on one pitch, retired designated hitter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reyesfr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Franmil Reyes<\/a><\/strong> before coughing up a single to center by second baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=massemi02,massey002mic&amp;search=Michael+Massey&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Massey<\/a><\/strong>. In came Chafin to pitch to pinch-hitter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lopezni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nicky Lopez<\/a><\/strong>. A walk by Lopez and single to right by right fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/isbelky01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kyle Isbel<\/a><\/strong> scored Massey for the tying run.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals tapped veteran left-handed fireballer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Aroldis Chapman<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 nicknamed The Cuban Missile \u2014 to pitch the bottom of the eighth. Chapman entered the game with eight appearances, all scoreless. Opponents were slashing .077\/.143\/.115 against him. With one out, Walker \u2014 pinch-hitting for Smith \u2014 drew a five-pitch walk. Moreno lined a single to right-center, allowing Walker to hustle his way to third. That brought up <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/ahmedni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nick Ahmed<\/a><\/strong>, pinch-hitting for Thomas. He dinked a 1\u20132 slider off the knuckles toward the right side of an in-on-the-corners infield. Somehow the ball stayed fair. A charging Pasquantino fired home, where Walker was diving in. The throw, wide of Perez, hit Walker in the left ribs and rolled to the backstop. Olivares led off with the aforementioned foul out. Pasquantino singled to center, making himself 3-for-4 on the day with a walk and a run scored. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fermifr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Freddy Fermin<\/a><\/strong> came out to pinch-run. Chafin struck out Perez, bringing up Reyes. A wild pitch to the backstop a la Nuke LaLoosh from <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durhabu01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bull Durham<\/a><\/strong><\/em> advanced Fermin to second. On 1\u20132, Chafin tried unsuccessfully to get Reyes to chase a slider in the dirt. He did it again on 2\u20132 to no avail, Moreno blocking both. With the count full, another low slider \u2014 one that avoided the dirt \u2014 got Reyes to bite. A swing and a miss fanned Reyes for the final out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a lefty on deck and first base open \u2014 I was gonna bury that last one,\u201d Chafin told reporters about the last pitch. \u201cIf he swung, sweet. If not, I\u2019ll go right after the lefty (Massey). I felt like it was the best business decision at that point in time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cA Win Is a Win\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t the cleanest game, but it was a win,\u201d Lovullo said. \u201cAny win is a good win. There were some good moments and some learning moments. We\u2019ll hammer away at those moments where we can pull the guys aside, talk about how they can address a couple of things, and get a little better for their next days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later he called it a good effort in \u201ca game that really didn\u2019t have any rhythm.\u201d He added, \u201cIt was one of those awkward days where it was a bumpy road for both teams. And like I said, a win is a win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walker told reporters, \u201cWe\u2019re not gonna score 10 every game and throw a no-hitter. So to win these tweeners where we feel like we have the chance to win but it&#8217;s a matter of executing and holding them off for one more inning\u2026. For me, these are the games where you look back and end up being proud of the season. These are the wins that need to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Quick Hits<\/h3>\n<p>The game attendance \u2014 9,815 \u2014 was, outside of restriction-laden 2021, the third lowest in the history of Chase Field. Two 2022 games against the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/marlins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Miami Marlins<\/a> were lower \u2014 May 11 (9,058) and May 10 (8,855). These three games are the only ones (other than 2021) in Chase Field history that failed to draw at least 10,000 fans. \u2026 Perez and Massey both had multi-hit games for the Royals in the loss. Perez went 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Massey went 2-for-4 with a run scored. \u2026 Perdomo and Smith also had multiple hits for the Diamondbacks. Perdomo was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Smith was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Chafin (2\u20130) earned the win while Chapman (0\u20131) took the loss, both in relief. Game Two between the Diamondbacks (13\u201311, first in NL West) and Royals (5\u201318, fifth in AL Central) is Tuesday evening. Righty <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/singebr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Brady Singer<\/a><\/strong> (1\u20132, 8.14 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Royals against Diamondbacks right-hander <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nelsory01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-04-25_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ryne Nelson<\/a><\/strong> (1\u20130, 4.91 ERA).
