Diamondbacks vs Giants Pregame \u2014 May 13, 2023<\/h2>\n

PHOENIX, May 13 \u2014 It is Game Three of a four-game set between the host Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> and the visiting San Francisco Giants<\/a>, which is the ninth game of a ten-game homestand for the Diamondbacks. For the Giants, this is the only stop on their road trip. Right-hander Zac Gallen<\/a><\/strong> (5\u20131, 2.36 ERA) will start for the Diamondbacks against Giants righty Anthony DeSclafani<\/a><\/strong> (3\u20132, 2.80 ERA). Prior to the game, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo<\/a><\/strong> met with the media on hand. Here are the highlights.<\/p>\n

Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo<\/h3>\n

Lovullo missed Friday night\u2019s game so he could attend his son\u2019s graduation ceremony at Northern Arizona University. Bench coach Jeff Banister<\/a><\/strong> managed in Lovullo\u2019s absence. Lovullo could not watch the game but streamed the game ticker on his phone. He and Banister have discussed the game and decisions Banister had to make. \u201cHe had a good reason for everything he did. He\u2019s got good instincts. Won the game, that\u2019s the bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lovullo had not yet discussed Christian Walker<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s Friday ejection with him, but they did text Friday night. Lovullo sent the first text shortly after the ejection occurred. \u201cI was proud of him. He didn\u2019t get back to me until after the game, so he was following MLB Guidelines,\u201d Lovullo smiled. Lovullo said he has not seen the video but knows Walker was \u201ca little bit frustrated\u201d about it. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to move forward,\u201d Lovullo concluded.<\/p>\n

The way Banister used the relievers last night made it where the team is \u201cfine\u201d for tonight\u2019s game bullpen-wise. Kevin Ginkel<\/a><\/strong> was used for length (2 2\/3 innings) in Wednesday’s finale with the Miami Marlins<\/a>, but that does not mean he\u2019ll become a full-time long man. \u201cWe feel like there\u2019s a little bit of a buildup there that (will allow him) to give us two innings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Injury Updates<\/h4>\n

Zach Davies<\/a><\/strong> is \u201cprogressing very well\u201d and \u201cis feeling very, very good.\u201d He will throw another bullpen session either Sunday or Monday. His catch partner, Carson Kelly<\/a><\/strong>, said Davies\u2019 last outing showed \u201cgood stuff that was coming out really, really well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kelly is \u201cpicking up a bat and taking some light swings\u201d on some \u201cunderhand flips in the cage.\u201d He is \u201cresuming more and more baseball activities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kyle Lewis<\/a><\/strong> will get at-bats Saturday. He had five at-bats Thursday and will get three to five Saturday. Lovullo still is not at liberty to specifically say what Lewis\u2019 malady is, other than \u201che had an infection\u201d and that it was a virus. He is \u201cprogressing well and building up strength and stamina.\u201d If Lovullo were to bet on who would return first, between Lewis and Kelly, he would bet on Lewis.<\/p>\n

Opposing Pitcher<\/h4>\n

When asked about Anthony DeSclafani, Lovullo sighed and said, \u201cOhhhhhh man.\u201d After a few seconds to think, he exhaled and continued, \u201cHe\u2019s been on an unbelievable run. In Cincinnati, I thought he was continuing to develop and show some really good qualities. Maybe a little mixed bag of success. But he’s put everything together since getting to San Francisco. It’s an aggressive fastball; he can spot it up. And he follows the game plan. He reminds me a little bit of Zach Gallen. He’s able to command the baseball and command different pitches.\u201d<\/p>\n
