According to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic<\/a>, The Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> are planning on calling up outfielder Jake McCarthy<\/a><\/strong> from Triple-A Reno. In a corresponding move, they are optioning rookie outfielder Dominic Fletcher<\/a><\/strong> to Reno.<\/p>\n

Struggled Out of the Gate<\/h4>\n

McCarthy was sent down earlier this year after struggling coming out of spring training. He was expected to be a key cog in a young outfield with Corbin Carroll<\/a><\/strong> and Alec Thomas<\/a><\/strong> after breaking out in his rookie season last year. While Carroll has had his own breakout rookie season and is currently the favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year award, both McCarthy and Thomas have struggled and were sent to Reno. At the time of his option, McCarthy was batting splits were .143\/.229\/.238. including a .073 in the previous seven games before his demotion. During his time in Reno, he hit .333 with four home runs and an OPS of .952.<\/p>\n

Fletcher Cooled Off<\/h4>\n

Fletcher is hitting .308 with two home runs and 13 RBI since his being called up. He got off to a hot start but struggled over the recent road trip where they faced the Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> and Philadelphia Phillies<\/a>.\u00a0 This has led the Diamondbacks to go with the hot hand.<\/p>\n

Out of Nowhere<\/h4>\n

The Diamondbacks have surprised many this season by competing in the crowded NL West. They currently are in second place right behind the Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a> and are holding onto a Wild Card Spot. They currently have the third-best record in the National League. Most national pundits had the Diamondbacks finishing third or fourth in the division<\/em> behind the Dodgers and San Diego Padres<\/a>. They have been led by strong pitching by Zac Gallen<\/strong><\/a>, Merrill Kelly<\/a><\/strong>, and an improved bullpen and clutch hitting.\u00a0 They are set to start a critical Memorial Day Weekend series at home against the Boston Red Sox<\/a> Friday.<\/p>\n
