Diamondbacks vs Rockies Pregame \u2014 May 30, 2023<\/h2>\n

PHOENIX, May 30 \u2014 It is Game Two of a four-game intradivision series between the host Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> and the visiting Colorado Rockies<\/a>, which is the fifth game of a ten-game homestand for the Diamondbacks. For the Rockies, this is the second game of a seven-game road trip that will also take the Rockies to Kansas City.<\/p>\n

Prior to the game, Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo<\/a><\/strong> and Rockies manager Bud Black<\/a><\/strong> met (separately) with the media on hand. Here are the highlights.<\/p>\n

Diamondbacks Manager Torey Lovullo<\/h3>\n

Injury Updates<\/h4>\n

Joe Mantiply<\/a><\/strong> threw a 25-pitch live session today. Carson Kelly<\/a><\/strong> hit off him. Kelly is heading to Oklahoma City tonight to join the Reno Aces (AAA) on a rehab assignment. He will have a full workday Wednesday and then start at catcher the next day.<\/p>\n

Mantiply \u201cfelt great\u201d and ran through some PFPs (pitcher fielding practice) post-outing. The team is \u201cstill trying to figure out what those next steps are,\u201d Lovullo said.<\/p>\n

Kyle Lewis<\/a><\/strong> had an off-day yesterday and will play the outfield tonight. He is progressing \u201cvery well.\u201d He still needs to finish building his stamina back up before he can return to the big-league club. Lovullo still cannot disclose what the medical ailment is.<\/p>\n

Victory Vest<\/h4>\n

Lovullo likes the Victory Vest, saying, \u201cYou can go back into the 1980 version of my apparel and probably find something in that part of the garage for sure.\u201d He is looking forward to the first time Zac Gallen<\/a><\/strong> gets it. For one, Lovullo doesn\u2019t think it will fit him, but secondly, because Gallen is such a humble guy. He has a \u201cfunny feeling\u201d Lourdes Gurriel Jr.<\/a><\/strong> is responsible for it because Gurriel was \u201cyukking it up\u201d as he entered the tunnel. Lovullo feels part of being a successful baseball player is \u201cbeing able to separate the seriousness of what happens in the moment\u201d and \u201chaving a little bit of balance and a good laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pitching Matchup<\/h4>\n

When asked what he thinks it will take for Gallen to \u201cget back on track\u201d after the last few outings, Lovullo said Gallen\u2019s outings were not bad at all. He said if there was a different outcome after he came out of the game in Philadelphia, \u201che would have had 5 2\/3 scoreless.\u201d Lovullo added that he, in retrospect, feels that he pulled Gallen too early and should have let him get out of it. \u201cI jumped the gun a little bit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Lovullo added, \u201cHe spoils us. We expect him to go out there and magically put up zeroes every single time. And when he doesn\u2019t, it\u2019s like, \u2018What\u2019s wrong with Zac?\u2019 Nothing\u2019s really wrong with Zac.\u201d Lovullo continued, \u201cHe\u2019s already on track, believe it or not.\u201d For Gallen to have a successful outing, he needs to \u201cestablish fastball command, figure out the sequencing, and land secondary stuff.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of Rockies starter Kyle Freeland<\/a><\/strong>, Lovullo said, \u201cHe\u2019s a competitor. He\u2019s a warrior out there. He just pitches \u2014 pitches both sides of the plate, cuts it, sinks it, changes speeds, with a changeup on the outer half of the plate. You have to cut the plate in half and be very disciplined to the side of the plate that you\u2019re looking at. If you\u2019re looking away and swinging in, it\u2019s gonna be a tough night. We have to be stubborn to the area we need to lock in on. And then he\u2019ll change speeds front to back, so we have to be careful about getting into pull mode.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rockies Manager Bud Black<\/h3>\n

Ryan McMahon<\/a><\/strong> has made some mechanical adjustments in his hitting approach. McMahon said they might be paying off now, especially in the sequencing and getting his body going. Black feels that the progress has been more in the physical area. Specifically, Black feels it is \u201cwhat his body needs to do to get the barrel in position to impact the ball.\u201d The adjustments, Black explained further, came from work with the \u201chitting guys,\u201d where they identified some areas for adjustment about a week ago.<\/p>\n

Black confirmed that Dinelson Lamet<\/a><\/strong> will start Wednesday, something Rockies Beat Writer Thomas Harding of MLB.com reported Sunday via Twitter. Lamet, when joining the team last season, said he ultimately wanted to be a starter, and this will be the first time he gets to do so for the Rockies. \u201cWhen a player feels strongly about his role,\u201d Black said, \u201cit\u2019s best suited for him to give it a go.\u201d<\/p>\n

Black on Zac Gallen<\/h4>\n

Black said Gallen is a \u201cgood pitcher. Really<\/em> good. For me, one of the best pitchers in the National League. Probably<\/em> under the radar nationally, but for me, not. I\u2019ve seen a lot of him, obviously, being in the same division. He\u2019s a real pitcher. Good stuff.\u201d Black said he has three very good pitches. \u201cFastball with location, good feel for a changeup, a breaking ball. More than anything, there\u2019s some deception in there, too. Guys just don\u2019t see the ball great. It\u2019s a gift that he has, a natural gift of deception. So really good pitcher. Fields his position, holds runners, all the things you look for beyond his stuff. He\u2019s got it all.\u201d<\/p>\n
