On the very next pitch, he bolted for second. He beat the tag but overslid the bag while the glove was still on him, so a replay review declared him out. This killed any momentum the Braves might have had, as first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=olsonma02,olson-006mat&amp;search=Matt+Olson&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Matt Olson<\/a><\/strong> grounded to the mound and third baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rileyau01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Austin Riley<\/a><\/strong> popped to the shortstop.<\/p>\n<p>The Diamondbacks made the caught-stealing hurt in the bottom half. Two batters later, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carroco02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Corbin Carroll<\/a><\/strong> hit a one-out bouncer to the right side. It deflected off Olson and toward second baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/albieoz01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ozzie Albies<\/a><\/strong>, who had no play at either base. Two batters later, left fielder Gurriel plated both runners with a sharp double to the left-field corner. When third baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/riverem01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Emmanuel Rivera<\/a><\/strong> struck out, the inning ended with the Diamondbacks holding a 2\u20130 lead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly on, we made a nice statement to jump out to the early lead,\u201d Lovullo said. \u201cAnd then the little things started popping up.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Phenomenal Defensive Play Preserves Lead<\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"WTmPMVRVRHNxHxJIw2Ea0w\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1495525891\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'WTmPMVRVRHNxHxJIw2Ea0w',sig:'CdnF8M6lUZNM5YfhMa4Do9c15SV4nzRPeL1WRuXzYOI=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1495525891',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The Braves got a run back in the top of the second on a two-out splashdown homer to the pool in right-center by left fielder Eddie Rosario.<\/p>\n<p>Then came one of those \u201clittle things\u201d Lovullo mentioned.<\/p>\n<p>The Braves were well on their way to tying the game in the top of the third after a two-out walk by Olson and liner to the left-field corner by Riley. The ball ricocheted farther to Gurriel\u2019s right than he expected, stumbling as he changed directions. While still moving toward the wall, he spun and fired to shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/ahmedni01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Nick Ahmed<\/a><\/strong>, the relay man in shallow left, as Olson neared third. Ahmed caught the throw and fired toward home, clearly much sooner than Olson expected. Olson slammed on the brakes as Rivera leapt to cut the throw off. When Rivera landed, Olson was a dead duck. Rivera took a few steps and tagged a stunned Olson for the third out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a lot of training and a lot of reps that these guys are paying attention to and caring about to help us win those inches,\u201d explained Lovullo. \u201cThat\u2019s the difference in the game right there.\u201d He later added about the play, \u201cYou don\u2019t see that often.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Diamondbacks made that play even more costly in the bottom of the third. Carroll drew a two-out walk and scored from first on a double to left by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/walkech02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Christian Walker<\/a><\/strong>, making the score 3\u20131.<\/p>\n<h3>Braves Claw to within a Run, Diamondbacks Hang On<\/h3>\n<p>Morton and Kelly traded zeroes until the top of the seventh, Morton not allowing a hit beyond a two-out double in the fourth by Ahmed. Rosario struck again, belting a one-out homer to the seats in left-center. Kelly struck out Albies for the second out before coughing up a single to center by shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/arciaor01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Orlando Arcia<\/a><\/strong>. That brought up center fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrimi04.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Michael Harris II<\/a><\/strong>, whose strikeout retired the side.<\/p>\n<p>Morton pitched around a one-out walk by Ahmed in the bottom of the seventh. Diamondbacks reliever <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=adamsau02,adamsau01&amp;search=Austin+Adams&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Austin Adams<\/a><\/strong> pitched a 1\u20132\u20133 top of the eighth. Braves reliever <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mchugco01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Collin McHugh<\/a><\/strong> matched Adams\u2019 feat in the bottom of the eighth.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=castrmi01,castro002mig&amp;search=Miguel+Castro&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Miguel Castro<\/a><\/strong> took the hill in the top of the ninth to close out the game. Catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=murphse01,murphy010sea&amp;search=Sean+Murphy&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sean Murphy<\/a><\/strong> led off with an infield single to the shortstop. Pinch-runner <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hillisa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sam Hilliard<\/a><\/strong> took over at first base. Designated hitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/darnatr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\"><strong>Travis d\u2019Arnaud<\/strong><\/a> belted a deep fly to left, one that Gurriel snatched with a leaping, possibly run-saving grab against the wall. Gurriel told reporters after the game through interpreter Alex Arpiza that he thought he had a play on it and was able to track it.<\/p>\n<p>Rosario, not letting it keep the Braves down, poked a hit-and-run single to left through the hole vacated by Ahmed, who was covering second for the throw. With runners now on first and third, Albies hit a fly to left. Gurriel caught it and made a strong enough throw home to keep Hilliard at third.<\/p>\n<p>Up came Arcia as the last hope for the Braves. His comebacker had a chance to get through, but the 6\u20197\u201d Castro made a reactionary glove save to the right of his head. Castro jogged toward first, gathering himself for an easy toss to first for the game-ending out.<\/p>\n<h3>Energy and Finding a Way to Win<\/h3>\n<p><a id=\"E7NbIRrHQa5K_5UczlCEEA\" class=\"gie-single\" style=\"color: #a7a7a7; text-decoration: none; font-weight: normal !important; border: none; display: inline-block;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/1495519488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'E7NbIRrHQa5K_5UczlCEEA',sig:'o7vEucPP0Qpfjpo8EVqFmVi5Got_KRXNNsgurcQicks=',w:'594px',h:'396px',items:'1495519488',caption: true ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Braves fans in attendance started doing the Tomahawk Chop in the seventh inning, but the hometown faithful drowned it out with boos and \u201cLet\u2019s go D-Backs!\u201d chants. Kelly told reporters postgame, \u201cOur fans didn\u2019t like that (the Tomahawk Chop) too much. It was some of the better energy I\u2019ve felt in here in a while. Games like that are why we do this.\u201d Gurriel added in Spanish, \u201cIt\u2019s a great feeling having that energy. That\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ninth inning saw multiple opportunities for the Diamondbacks to lose, but they found a way to win. Kelly told reporters that he talked to someone about that after the game but before the reporters arrived. \u201cThe last couple of years,\u201d Kelly said, \u201cwe would have found a way to lose that game. I think the fact that we\u2019ve been playing well obviously helps. The confidence we\u2019ve built over the first couple of months of the season helps going into a game like that. We know we can finish games; we have the confidence to finish games.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kelly also gave credit to Castro, saying it was a testament to him \u201cnot to get rattled. First and third, right there. The last one came in Game Four of the 2021 NLCS against the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/dodgers\/\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>, and the last regular-season one came while he was with the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/twins\/\">Minnesota Twins<\/a>, August 11, 2020 at the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/brewers\/\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a>. \u2026 Carroll scored from first on two separate doubles, both of which were hit to left field. Lovullo said his eyes normally watch the middle infielders on hits like that, looking for their positioning. But when Carroll is on first, he immediately watches Carroll run. \u2026 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marteke01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-03_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ketel Marte<\/a><\/strong> failed to reach base, ending his on-base streak at an impressive 30 games. \u2026 The Diamondbacks have now won six straight games, doing so for the first time since August 12 through 18, 2020.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Kelly (7\u20133) earned the win, while Morton (5\u20136) took a tough loss, losing despite putting in a quality start.
