Lane Thomas<\/a> continues to produce as the leadoff hitter for the Washington Nationals<\/a>. He has hit safely in 20 of his last 23 games, scoring 19 runs while hitting .290 over that stretch. In that span, he has hit five of his nine home runs. He is the team leader in home runs, runs scored, slugging percentage and total bases. Not only has he become a fan favorite, he has become the vocal leader of this team, both on the field and in the clubhouse.<\/p>\n

Arrival to DC<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Thomas was acquired by the Nationals from the St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> back in 2021 in exchange for Jon Lester<\/a>. You might say he was considered a \u201cthrow-in\u201d when the trade was made. Originally drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>, he was never really considered a top prospect for them and was acquired by the Cardinals in 2017. He had several injuries while playing in the minor leagues but was able to climb as high as the number nine prospect with the Cardinals in 2019.<\/p>\n

Change of Scenery<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Lane Thomas’ production could be contributed to the change of scenery, but Thomas looks like a new player since he joined the Nationals. Working with hitting coaches Darnell Coles<\/a> and Pat Roessler<\/a> has helped. It also could be that manager Dave Martinez<\/a> has instilled confidence in him when he named Thomas a starter for the 2022 season. Whatever it is, it has worked, and Thomas has become that go-to guy. Since last September, when he was moved up to the leadoff spot, he appears comfortable in that new role and the role of team leader.<\/p>\n

So far in 2023<\/strong><\/h4>\n

So far in 2023 Thomas has appeared in 63 games with 247 at-bats, posting 69 hits, 113 total bases, nine home runs, 30 RBI, and a .279 batting average. Thomas has played mostly right field but can play all three outfield spots if needed. He has played right field quite well with only two errors, 131 putouts, and six assists. Thomas has also shown a much-improved arm strength, which can be attributed to working diligently the past two off seasons.<\/p>\n

Signs a Deal<\/strong><\/h4>\n

This past January, Thomas agreed to a one-year, $2.2 million contract with the Nationals, avoiding salary arbitration. It was mentioned that he is the kind of player you need for a rebooting and rebuilding of this team. He is a player you can build a championship-caliber club around.\u00a0 Thomas is showing the talent, is well-liked by the manager and coaches for his work ethic, and has become a fan favorite.<\/p>\n

Future<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Lane Thomas continues to produce while still learning all aspects of the game. Martinez still thinks he has \u201cuntapped\u201d potential and there is no denying that potential, how good he can be. Thomas has already shown he hits left-handed pitching well and has worked especially hard to hit right-handed pitching. He can be a dependable defender and a potential power threat at the plate. He should be an All-Star for 2023\u2014and be a surprise positive aspect for this organization.<\/p>\n
