We\u2019ve seen some movement in the team bullpen\/reliever\/relief corps rankings, but the teams toward the top have not changed.<\/p>\n<p>These rankings are not interested in what some guy in the minors did back in April before he was sent down. We want to see whose current relief roster is the toughest. That will be most useful when watching and analyzing games.<\/p>\n<p>Rankings are split into the following categories. These categories encompass what a relief pitcher\u2019s jobs are and are weighted according to importance. We don\u2019t want to get bogged down, so we\u2019ll keep it brief. <em>(Author\u2019s Note: For full details, leave a comment and I\u2019ll be glad to get back to you.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Clutch<\/strong> (45% of score) \u2014 How well they perform in late innings either while the game is tied or while holding a narrow lead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Run Prevention<\/strong> (35%) \u2014 How well they keep runs off the board, including inherited runners.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Baserunner Prevention<\/strong> (13%) \u2014 Who has the best WHIP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Command<\/strong> (7%) \u2014 Who has the best strikeout percentage minus walk percentage (K\u2013BB%).<\/p>\n<p>The total score in each category is based on the league average. Zero points equals the league average. Positive scores are better than league average; negative scores are worse. In the late innings of close or tie games, forget it \u2014 the Brewers are virtually automatic. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=willide03,willia005dev&amp;search=Devin+Williams&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Devin Williams<\/a><\/strong> did not break an egg or blow a save all season until this past week. They keep runs off the board, with a 79.0% scoreless percentage. They\u2019ve improved to the best in the NL when it comes to keeping inherited runners from scoring. Their ERA-minus is the fourth lowest, as is their WHIP. They need to improve their K\u2013BB%, which is a tick below the league average.<\/p>\n<h4>Better Take an Early Lead\u2026<\/h4>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/pirates\/\"><strong>Pittsburgh Pirates<\/strong><\/a><strong> (33.0, Second in NL), No Change from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>63.9<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>6.0<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>7.7<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>16.5<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Can\u2019t go wrong with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bednada01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">David Bednar<\/a><\/strong>, one of the top closers in baseball. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moretda01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dauri Moreta<\/a><\/strong> is continuing to pitch well. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/holdeco01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Colin Holderman<\/a><\/strong> is now on the IL, and the Pirates will definitely miss him in his absence. The Pirates\u2019 active-roster scoreless percentage is still the highest in the NL, despite the Holderman injury, but their inherited runners percentage has climbed to sixth highest. But the Pirates still rank highly in reliever WHIP \u2014 third lowest in the NL \u2014 and are now first in the NL in K\u2013BB%.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/mariners\/\"><strong>Seattle Mariners<\/strong><\/a><strong> (32.1, First in AL), No Change from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>61.4<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>7.2<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>-1.0<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>29.9<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Mariners still have the top AL ratings in clutch and command. And also like last week, they are the AL leaders in scoreless percentage but suffer from a relatively high inherited runners scored percentage. Their WHIP has remained stable at a tick higher than the AL average. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/speiega01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gabe Speier<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s scoreless percentage has climbed past 90%. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/topaju01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Justin Topa<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sewalpa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Paul Sewald<\/a><\/strong> continue to be tough in setup and closing, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/marlins\/\"><strong>Miami Marlins<\/strong><\/a><strong> (27.2, Third in NL), No Change from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>54.1<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>4.8<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>1.5<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>13.4<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Marlins are fifth in the NL in K\u2013BB%, more than two percentage points higher than the NL average. Their WHIP is better than league average but is toward the middle of the pack. Run prevention is still strong, as they are fourth in the NL in scoreless percentage and fifth in the NL in ERA-minus. They need to improve their inherited runners percentage, as they are middle of the pack in the NL. But in clutch, they continue to dominate, coming in third in the NL behind the Brewers and Pirates. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/florody01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dylan Floro<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scottta01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tanner Scott<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pukaj01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A.J. Puk<\/a><\/strong> are as tough a trio as any.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>The Very Good<\/h4>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/tigers\/\"><strong>Detroit Tigers<\/strong><\/a><strong> (16.8, Second in AL), <\/strong><strong>\u25b2<\/strong><strong> +2 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>42.2<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>-7.2<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>3.4<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>-1.9<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Tigers still get the heavy boost from their late-game clutch, holding steady as the second highest in the AL. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/langeal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Alex Lange<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/foleyja01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jason Foley<\/a><\/strong> continue to shut opponents down late. Run prevention still hurts their score, although their inherited runner percentage improved from third highest to fourth highest. Their K\u2013BB% has improved from 13th in the AL to eighth. These improvements moved them up two spots in the overall rankings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/giants\/\"><strong>San Francisco Giants<\/strong><\/a><strong> (16.2, Fourth in NL), <\/strong><strong>\u25bc -1 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>28.9<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>5.0<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>7.9<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>6.1<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Their run prevention rating improved, but everything else dropped a bit. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rogerty01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tyler Rogers<\/a><\/strong> is continuing his run as one of the top setup men in baseball. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dovalca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Camilo Doval<\/a><\/strong> is slightly below average in clutch, something that must improve if the Giants want to catch the Diamondbacks.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/orioles\/\"><strong>Baltimore Orioles<\/strong><\/a><strong> (12.7, Third in AL), <\/strong><strong>\u25b2<\/strong><strong> +1 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>20.7<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>4.6<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>2.1<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>21.7<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Orioles have not slipped in late-inning clutch, with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/canoye01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Yennier Cano<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bautife01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Felix Bautista<\/a><\/strong> remaining among the league\u2019s best. Despite that, they climbed by one spot due to others slipping by a greater magnitude. Clutch and Command continue to be their strengths. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/swanser01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Erik Swanson<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/romanjo03.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jordan Romano<\/a><\/strong> remain as their top performers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/yankees\/\"><strong>New York Yankees<\/strong><\/a><strong> (9.4, Sixth in AL), <\/strong><strong>\u25bc -1 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>20.7<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>1.0<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>1.9<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>-7.0<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Yankees still struggle with Command, although that is the only category where their score did not decrease from last week.<\/p>\n<h4>Slightly above Average<\/h4>\n<ol start=\"11\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/diamondbacks\/\"><strong>Arizona Diamondbacks<\/strong><\/a><strong> (6.5, Fifth in NL), <\/strong><strong>\u25b2<\/strong><strong> +1 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>13.5<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>2.3<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>-2.3<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>-1.8<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Diamondbacks\u2019 clutch improved, with their score more than doubling. This caused their overall rating to increase despite their score falling in every other category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"12\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/angels\/\"><strong>Los Angeles Angels<\/strong><\/a><strong> (4.2, Seventh in AL), <\/strong><strong>\u25b2<\/strong><strong> +1 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>10.8<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>-1.1<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>-0.5<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>-3.2<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Their clutch and run prevention have improved over last week. Baserunner prevention and Command fell. Their overall score improved due to the heavier weight of the former two categories. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/devench02.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chris Devenski<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/estevca01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Carlos Estevez<\/a><\/strong> are still carrying the torch for this relief corps.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"13\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/reds\/\"><strong>Cincinnati Reds<\/strong><\/a><strong> (2.0, Sixth in NL), <\/strong><strong>\u25b2<\/strong><strong> +6 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>2.0<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>1.7<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>5.4<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>-2.4<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Reds are one of the three biggest climbers this week, moving up six spots in the list. Their score dropped in Command, the category with the lowest weight. But they improved in everything else, especially in Clutch. Consequently, their team is among the hottest in baseball and has blazed its way to first place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>The Average<\/h4>\n<ol start=\"14\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/phillies\/\"><strong>Philadelphia Phillies<\/strong><\/a><strong> (0.9, 7th in NL), <\/strong><strong>\u25b2<\/strong><strong> +6 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>1.1<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>-1.3<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>-1.8<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>14.6<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Phillies slipped slightly in run prevention. However, they have improved greatly in every other category, prompting their climb in the rankings. This means they have moved from \u201cBelow Average\u201d to \u201cAverage.\u201d This is not where they want to be yet, but it\u2019s progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"15\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/braves\/\"><strong>Atlanta Braves<\/strong><\/a><strong> (0.7, Eighth in NL), <\/strong><strong>\u25bc -4 from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>2.7<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>-6.4<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>4.2<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>15.9<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The roller coaster continues. Two weeks ago \u2014 the week before this column debuted \u2014 they were 17th. Last week, they were 11th. Now they\u2019re 15th. The reason? Their clutch fell due to the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chaveje01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=sportrelay.com&amp;utm_campaign=2023-06-20_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jesse Chavez<\/a><\/strong> injury. Once he returns to the active roster, their rating should climb again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"16\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/sportrelay.com\/mlb\/category\/mets\/\"><strong>New York Mets<\/strong><\/a><strong> (0.2, Ninth in NL), No Change from Last Week<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>-6.7<\/em><em> Clutch, <\/em><em>3.5<\/em><em> Run Prevention, <\/em><em>11.1<\/em><em> Baserunners, <\/em><em>8.5<\/em><em> Command<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Mets continue to struggle with clutch, as their score has dropped another point since last week. Everything else improved, significantly in some cases. Otherwise, here\u2019s the elevator speech.<\/p>\n<p>A Goose Egg is like a save, except more restrictive.
