The Houston Astros<\/a> have agreed to terms with veteran second baseman Jose Altuve<\/a><\/strong> on a five-year contract extension. This development was first reported by Chandler Rome<\/a> of The Athletic<\/em>. The extension will go into effect in 2025 and run through the 2029 campaign. The deal guarantees Altuve $125 million over that stretch of time. Bob Nightengale of USA Today<\/em><\/a> was among those to relay the breakdown, which includes a $15 million signing bonus. That will be followed by $30 million in each of the first three years. He will earn $10 million in each of the final two.<\/p>\n

Hall of Fame Candidate<\/h4>\n

The eight-time All-Star will enter his 13th full season in the majors in 2024. In his first 12 seasons, he has established himself as a future Hall of Fame candidate. He is one of the top three players in franchise history, along with Hall of Famers Jeff Bagwell<\/a><\/strong> and Craig Biggio<\/strong><\/a>. He was the fastest Astro to reach 1,000 career hits. Furthermore, Altuve has been the central figure in the most successful era in Astros history. That history includes eight postseason appearances and a record seven consecutive appearances in the ALCS. Those seven appearances have netted four American League Pennants. Jose Altuve also helped the Astros win two World Series titles. He entered the 2024 season in the final year of a seven-year contract extension that he signed in 2018.<\/p>\n

Jose Altuve hit .311 with 17 home runs and 51 RBI in 90 games in 2023 as the Astros again advanced to the ALCS, where they ultimately lost to the Texas Rangers<\/a> in seven games. Altuve is steadily climbing the Astros’ all-time lists with his offensive prowess, ranking third in hits (2,047), fourth in extra-base hits (640) and games played (1,668), and fifth in home runs (209). Altuve was set to hit free agency after this season. He will now remain with the team for which he has played since his debut in 2011. The deal will take him through his age-39 season.<\/p>\n
