Marlins Acquire David Robertson from Mets

Marlins David Robertson

The Miami Marlins have acquired right-hander David Robertson in a trade with the New York Mets. This move immediately adds depth to their bullpen. The Marlins will also pick up the remaining $3.5 million still owed to Robertson this season. The Mets, who now appear to be selling, will receive prospects Ronald Hernandez and Marco Vargas, who are both in the Rookie League.

Crafty Veteran

Robertson, a crafty veteran with playoff experience, was part of the New York Yankees‘ 2009 World Series championship team. He brings some respected experience to a young Marlins team, and will certainly provide leadership. He has a 2.05 ERA in 40 games with 14 saves in 17 save opportunities in 44 innings. The big statistic is that he has seven holds. Look for him to be both a setup man and closer.

Marlins Are All In

The Marlins have been a surprise under first-year Manager Skip Schumaker, and they appear to be all in to win at least an NL Wild Card spot. Currently holding a 55–48 record, the Marlins have work to do ahead of the 2023 trade deadline. This trade could help the players push harder, and take more chances knowing that the front office believes in them, and is willing to get the help they need to take them all the way.

More Trades

Along with David Robertson, the Marlins have also traded for Jorge Lopez from the Minnesota Twins. This move indicates that this organization is ready to make more trades for established veterans who can help this team now as they look to get back into the playoffs. Their starting rotation has been better than expected but the more pitching you have in a playoff run always helps so look for them to add a starter, or more, to the mix.

What This Means for the Mets

What does this mean for the Mets? With many teams in front of them for the Wild Card race, this trade could be seen as signal that their front office intends to look to trade more players. They will be looking to strengthen their farm system which is ranked No. 11 according to MLB.com. Expect them to bring up a few of prospects to gain major league experience when they’re under no pressure.

Playoffs Within Grasp

The Miami Marlins acquire David Robertson knowing the regular season still has 59 games left. This gives him time to gel with the team. However, the team recognizes the playoffs are in their grasp. With one or two more keen trades before the deadline, they just might complete this season with a playoff spot, and a chance to win it all.
