Athletics Trade Esteury Ruiz to Dodgers for Carlos Duran

The Athletics announced Tuesday that they have traded outfielder Esteury Ruiz to the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor-league right-hander Carlos Duran. Both players have been assigned to their new club’s respective Triple-A affiliates.

Ruiz, 26, set the American League record for stolen bases by a rookie, with 67. Since then, he has had trouble staying on the field. In 2024, injuries held him to 29 games for the then-Oakland Athletics.

He did not make the major-league roster coming out of spring training. On March 17, the Athletics optioned him to Triple-A Las Vegas, and on March 30, they designated him for assignment, removing him from the 40-man roster.

In his 178 major-league games, he has slashed .243/.297/.343, batting 131-for-539 with 27 doubles, three triples, seven homers, 57 RBI, 73 steals in 92 attempts, and 60 runs scored.

Carlos Duran

Duran, 23, is a 6’7” fireballer. He has been in the Dodgers system since 2018, when he was playing in the Dominican rookie league as a 16-year-old. In 2025, he has made one appearance — a start — for the Triple-A Oklahoma City Comets. He allowed one run on three hits, walking four and striking out eight across 4 1/3 innings.

Duran is a high-strikeout pitcher, having fanned 59 of the 202 batters he’s faced in AA and AAA (29.2%). However, he also has a high walk rate, yielding 25 (12.3%). When looking solely at AAA, his walk rate increases to 27.0% (7-of-26). For comparison, in 2024, the major league average K% was 22.6% and BB% was 8.2%.
