There’s no way to sugarcoat it: the Boston Red Sox were very successful against the New York Yankees in the 2025 regular season. Across 13 matchups, the Red Sox won all but four, outscoring the Yankees 66–51 in the process. The Yankees were shut out twice, embarrassed 12–1 at home in August, and seemingly manhandled by their archrivals.
However, they are still a quality baseball club. Winners of eight straight, the Yankees are baseball’s hottest team. In fact, since August 11, the Yankees have the best record in the majors at 32–12. They hit the most home runs in the regular season, have a potent 1–2 punch with Max Fried and Carlos Rodon, and their bullpen has some of the top names in baseball. However, if they plan to get past the Red Sox, they must do these three things.
Strike First
The Yankees won four games against the Red Sox in the regular season. What did they do in all four of those games? They scored first. This isn’t a coincidence. This isn’t luck. This is evidence that, when the Yankees’ potent offense lands the first punch, they win. By scoring first, New York puts less pressure on their starting pitchers and allows them to play with run support. The Yankees can come from behind and win, but they play their best baseball when they jump in front.
Have a Quality Start From Rodon
Carlos Rodon will have all the pressure on him in game two. If the Yankees take game one, he’ll be tasked with closing out the series. But if the Yankees lose the first game, he’ll have to save New York’s season. No matter what the Yankees do to open the series, Rodon will need a quality start regardless. His 5.74 ERA against Boston this season doesn’t inspire much confidence, but the Yankees need him to come through on Wednesday night.
Lean on Giancarlo Stanton
Few players have dominated a single team quite like Giancarlo Stanton has dominated the Red Sox. In 84 career games against the Red Sox, Stanton has hit .269 with 16 home runs and 47 RBI. But as much as he’s dominated the Red Sox, Stanton has dominated the postseason even more. In 41 career postseason games, Stanton has 18 home runs and 40 RBI. The recipe is simple: let Giancarlo Stanton do his thing against an opponent he owns, in a setting he excels.
The Task at Hand
It’s clear that the Yankees have World Series aspirations. Winners of 94 games in the regular season, their roster appears built for the postseason. But standing in their way is an all too familiar foe, one who has been successful against the Yankees for the past five months. The Yankees have as good a chance as any at returning to the fall classic, but it starts with them taking down the Red Sox.
