Athletics Claim Andy Ibanez, DFA Max Schuemann
The Athletics claimed infielder Andy Ibanez off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday, according to a team press release. To make room on the 40-man roster, they designated infielder Max Schuemann for assignment.
Andy Ibanez
Andy Ibanez played in 91 games for the Detroit Tigers in 2025, starting 33. In 68 games, he played third base. He also played second (11 games), first (four games), shortstop (one game), and even left field (one game). Ibanez slashed .239/.301/.352 (42-for-176) in 2025 with four homers and 21 RBI. Additionally, he had eight doubles, 26 strikeouts, 12 walks, and 24 runs scored.
After the 2025 season, the Tigers did not tender Ibanez a contract for 2026, making him a free agent. On January 13, he signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Dodgers, with all of it guaranteed. However, the Dodgers designated him for assignment Tuesday, making him available on waivers. By claiming him, the Athletics will now pay Ibanez the $1.2 million.
Ibanez also played for the Texas Rangers in 2021 and 2022 before joining the Tigers for the 2023 campaign.
Max Schuemann
Other than a nine-day stint with Triple-A Las Vegas at the end of August, Max Schuemann spent the entire 2025 season with the Athletics. It was his second season with the Athletics. During his 101 games with the team, he played every position except pitcher, catcher, and first base. He slashed .197/.295/.273 (36-for-183) with four doubles, two triples, two homers, and 13 RBI. Additionally, he stole seven bases in eight attempts and scored 20 runs.
Schuemann was on base for Nick Kurtz’s first home run in the 6-for-6, four-homer game in Houston on July 25. He was tempted to steal during that at-bat but chose to “let the kid hit.” Additionally, due to borrowing an item from Kurtz, Schuemann jokingly claimed to be the “good luck charm.” Both stories are detailed here.
Looking Ahead
Every other team in the league will have a chance to claim Schuemann off waivers. Athletics beat writer Martin Gallegos from MLB.com said on X (formerly Twitter) Friday that he would expect Schuemann to re-join the Athletics as a non-roster invite in spring training if he clears waivers.
