A New Utility Player in the Bronx

With spring training beginning in just under two weeks, the New York Yankees have announced a trade with the Athletics on Monday, February 9, acquiring infielder Max Schuemann in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Luis Burgos

Per a press release from the Athletics regarding the trade, Schuemann was designated for assignment on Friday when the Athletics claimed Andy Ibañez from the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Schuemann, 28, was a 20th-round pick by the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 draft. He made his MLB debut in April of 2024.

During the 2025 season, Schuemann played in 101 games with 47 starts. He ended the 2025 season with a .197 average, two home runs, 13 RBI, and 36 hits. Max Schuemann has played second base, shortstop, third base, and multiple outfield positions, bringing a new utility player to the Yankees roster.

Luis Burgos to Athletics

The Yankees traded Burgos, 20, originally signed in 2024 out of the Dominican Republic. According to the Athletics press release, the minor league pitcher had two seasons with the Yankees’ affiliate in the Dominican Summer League. In his two seasons, Burgos was 4-4 with a 3.39 ERA with 10 starts in 25 games. In 2025, Burgos went 3-4 with a 2.44 ERA with eight starts in 11 games with the Bombers.

To date, Burgos has struck out 71 and walked 42 in 79 2/3 innings.

Next for the Yankees

Following the trade between the Yankees and Athletics, the Yankees designated 22-year-old outfielder Yanquiel Fernández for assignment. This is to make room on the team’s 40-man roster.

In addition, the Yankees outrighted both right-handed pitcher Dom Hamel and infielder Braden Shewmake to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Both were invited to spring training as non-roster invitees, according to MLB.com.
