Third basemen Matt Chapman is staying in The Bay. The San Francisco Giants and the 31-year-old Chapman agreed on an extension to keep him in San Francisco through the 2030 season, which will expire after Chapman’s age 37 season. The deal is officially six years and worth $151 million.

The Giants initially signed Chapman to close out 2023-24 free agency. After negotiations dragged out further than expected, the Giants and Chapman agreed to a three-year deal worth $54 million with player options after every season. Throughout the 2024 season, Chapman expressed his desire to remain with the club. He has verbally supported manager Bob Melvin. Whom he spent five seasons playing for as a member of the Oakland Athletics.

Chapman’s Career with Giants

Chapman has proven to be one of the few bright spots for one of the most disappointing teams in the National League this year. He slashed .247/.333/.445 in his first year as a Giant. Chapman leads the team in almost every offensive statistic. He has 22 home runs, 69 RBI, 61 walks, 126 hits, and 90 runs scored in 136 games.

His consistency of staying on the field may be his biggest strength for the Giants. This is a team that has dealt with a surplus of injuries causing constant roster shuffle. Not to mention his glove, winning platinum glove twice to go along with his four career gold gloves.

Giants Future Going Forward

The extension lines up perfectly with Giants’ ace Logan Webb’s contract. This ensures the ground ball pitcher will have one of the best defensive third basemen at the hot corner. The extension ties Jung Hoo Lee’s six-year $113 million deal signed last offseason as the longest contract given to a player during the Farhan Zaidi era.

On Thursday morning, it was reported by San Francisco Chronicle Giants beat reporter, Susan Slusser, that “Chapman says he’s already heard from players on different teams with potential interest in playing with the Giants after signing his extension.” The Giants are once expected to be big players during this year’s offseason with financial flexibility. As they remain in pursuit of a true franchise cornerstone.
