The Arizona Diamondbacks continued extending key players on Wednesday. After completing a five-year deal with right-hander Brandon Pfaadt, the D’backs extended a key piece of their offense. They agreed to a six-year extension with All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte. The deal is said to be worth $116 million.
MVP Caliber Season
Marte, 31, is coming off of an MVP-caliber season for the Snakes. He hit .292 with 36 home runs while driving in 106 runs. Originally acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for Jean Segura and Mitch Haniger in 2016, Marte has developed into a superstar in the desert. In 2023, he led the team to the 2023 World Series against the Texas Rangers. He set a Major League record with hits in 20 consecutive postseason games. He finished third in NL MVP voting in 2024 and won his first Silver Slugger Award.
Extended to 2031
Marte had signed a five-year extension in 2022 worth $76 million, but with his play and leadership, the team felt that he had outplayed that contract. Marte has expressed interest in playing the remainder of his career in Arizona with the D’Backs.
Strong Career
Over his 11-year career with Arizona and Seattle, Marte has racked up 1,143 hits, 143 home runs, and 515 RBI. The switch-hitter has developed a reputation for destroying left-handed pitching while still being a threat from the left side. Not only has he hit the ball well in his career, but Marte has also swiped 61 bags in his career. So he’s a threat while batting and a threat on the basepaths. The Diamondbacks hope he’ll continue his successful career in Arizona.
